(18 May 2020) Rome’s Corsi Trattoria, a favourite for the past 60 years for locals and tourists alike, is reopening after two months of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Owner Manuela Paiella was busy on Monday, making sure everything was in place before her first customers arrived for a plate of pasta, tomatoes stuffed with rice, or a dish of tripe and a good glass of wine.
Corsi is reopening with new restrictions in place, with hand gel at front doors, cooks and waiters in gloves and masks and customers sitting far apart.
A new ordering system is in place, with customers able to use their cell phones to see the menu.
Before the virus struck, waitress squeezed between crowded tables reeling off a list of items on the daily menu and delivering plates pilled high with food.
“Everything has changed. Slowly, slowly we will try to understand and to adapt to this coronavirus,” said cook, Raffaele Di Cristo, as he stood in the doorway to the kitchen with his mask and gloves on.
One of the trattoria’s first customers said it was an “emotional” event, dining out with friends for the first time in many weeks.
Across Italy restaurants, hairdressers, gyms and stores are opening up after months of being closed, adjusting to a complicated series of rules for hygiene as coronavirus restrictions are cautiously lifted.
