The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 – 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 – 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 – 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 – 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 – 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.

The biggest enemy of wine might not be what you think it is.
Is expensive wine always better? is a question I am often asked. And the simple answer is “No”. There is a correlation between the price of a wine and its quality, but it gets weaker and weaker the higher the price gets. A 20-dollar bottle of wine is usually significantly better than a two-dollar bottle of wine – Yes, they exist in some markets.
Most winemakers want to make the best wine possible but if you are not able to sell your product above 2 Dollars your hands are tied. Talent can only compensate for so much and even the most talented winemaker cannot make Grand Cru quality wine from Vin de France quality grapes.
At some point, however, the most high-end viticulture and winemaking techniques stop contributing to the quality. You can only drive down yields to a certain point and the price of new Barriques is also capped. This is why a 200-dollar bottle doesn’t have to be that much better than a 20-dollar bottle – in some cases, it can even be worse.
The price of a super expensive bottle of wine is not just determined by cost but by demand or in some cases marketing strategies. That means for us, that when we close our eyes and disconnect ourselves from the brand in front of us, we might make beautiful discoveries from lesser-known regions or producers.
Leon has selected six wines that are all made from the same grape variety or varieties. They likely come from different places and one of them is much more expensive than the others. I will blind-taste the wines to find out whether it makes sense to spend much more on a bottle or not…

Is expensive wine always better is a question that I’m often asked and the simple answer is no there’s a correlation between the price of a wine and its quality but it gets weaker and weaker the more expensive the wine gets a $20 bottle is usually significantly

More expensive than a $2 bottle of wine yes they do exist in some markets most wine makers want to make the best wine possible but if you’re not able to sell your product above $2 your hands are tight Talent can only compensate for so much and even the most talented wine

Maker cannot make corn crew quality wine from Van France quality grapes on the other side of the spectrum even the most high-end viticulture and wine making techniques stop contributing to the quality of the wine at some point you can only drive down yields so much and

The price of new BS is also capped this is why a $200 bottle of wine doesn’t have to be that much better than that $20 bottle of wine in some cases it can even be worse the price of a super expensive bottle of wine isn’t just

Determined by the cost but also by the demand and in some cases marketing strategies this means for us that if we close our eyes and disconnect ourselves from the brand in front of us we might actually make beautiful discoveries from undiscovered regions or producers following that thought Leon has selected

Six wine for me to taste blind they are all made from the same great variety or varieties and they likely come from different places and one of them is very expensive while the other ones are more affordable so let’s see whether I can identify the great variety and hopefully

We’ll find some beautiful discoveries along the Way all right let’s start with wine number one and it’s definitely a red look at that color that’s really dark it’s like opaque okay I realized that this is kind of difficult for you to see as I’m wearing my black shirt but if I would have had to taste some white ones

This would have been easier for you but here look at this this is super dark so dark color doesn’t give away all that much there are some great varieties that this likely isn’t I mean pinoa tringa or probably also gach don’t really have this dark color so so there’s a long

List of other great varieties that this could be so let’s give this a little smell and this tastes well it smells pretty good I mean it smells of like blackberries ciss there’s a little bit of Plum character coming through as well so it’s quite complex quite dark fruit

Characters that I can sense here there’s maybe a little bit of Oak as well but it’s pretty well integrated so it’s a complex rich and intense red wine on the palette this actually shows quite a lot of acidity and freshness it actually feels quite Lively the talents are

Present but they are not super grippy quite a lot of liveliness there so what could this be I mean this could be quite a few different things but it feels like there’s a bordeau varietal here in in that wine so C mer P Vero malbeck cire one one of those grape

Varieties they are all kind of bringing dark fruit character concentration um the talents actually don’t feel that pronounce so for me this doesn’t shout caban s but it could also be blend of all those five varietals or some other ones in smaller proportions so I’m not

Ready to commit myself to one of those great varieties but I’m going to rate this wine 92 points I think it’s really beautiful juicy Rich the talents are present the acidity is there there’s bright fruit character so it’s quite a beautiful red so let’s move on to Wine number two again really

Dark very dark okay this is different in character there’s a little bit more red fruit here so it’s not all black there’s also a little bit of red current character coming through a little bit more cherry flavors so it feels like it’s probably from a cooler region than the previous one the

Texture seems to confirm that the Tans are grippy there’s good freshness there quite Lively and vibrant quite a complete red I’m still not 100% sure what this could be but it feels more like caban than like well it could be caban Fran as well but didn’t we already do that I don’t really

Remember but yeah it could be caban Fran it could be caban Sor it could be mer maybe malbeck and cir are also options but I don’t think there’s uh there’s enough mybe or C in the world to really get together six really good wines from different places um hm tricky due to the

Intense tance the grip the acidity and freshness there I actually think that this is probably caban sovo just because it just has more grip a little bit more concentration especially the previous one than what you normally get from cavan Fran this should be from a cooler

Climate so not not really a warm growing region could be from somewhere like South Africa in a coola side Chile it could be from New Zealand maybe even Australia uh from from a cooler area so that’s tricky but for me this has a little bit of

Green mintiness to it a little bit of green bell pepper a little bit of mintiness red fruit character so I think I’m going to say Chile here cab s from Chile and there’s probably other great varieties in the blend but mainly cabet and I’m going to rate this 91 points so wine number

Three again red but kind of brown in color this is quite quite brownish let me get out my my thing here do you see that it’s it’s brown there’s a little bit of garet here and it also smells quite a bit more mature so here we have some prunes dried

Fruit characters it’s a little bit more spicy so there’s quite a bit more tery flavors flavors that develop during the maturation in bottle so this certainly feels aged so this feels like a more classic expression of Cabernet Sor in a bordo blend it smells of Cassis but also

Of spice so you have like those cigar box flavors coming through the dry fruit character on the palette it’s actually quite juicy and Rich the Tans are mellow and round and the Finish is really long so this is delicious it’s not the most impressive bordeau style wine that I’ve

Tasted but it’s but it’s wellmade made from the way the wine presents itself in the glass and The Taste and the smell I’d say it’s probably 15 years old so maybe the 2009 vintage and I would place this in bordo I’d say this is maybe a San julan a really well-made Wine Not

The top top quality but but pretty good so I’m going to rate this 92 points delicious stuff this feels like a really well-made bordo Star Wine and now let’s taste wine number four four is not the darkest wine in the tasting I mean it shows some like brownish notes but it’s it’s pretty

Purple the color in red wine is a good indication for its age the older red wine gets the Browner it gets so this is actually showing some signs of aging but not as much as the previous wine it doesn’t always mean that a Browner wine is always older it also depends on other

Factors like the grape variety the way the wine was made and so on and so forth and obviously also how it was matured but this looks Less Old than the previous wine but older than the ones before that this smells quite delicious it has like these dark berry fruit

Characters like blackberries and ciss notes there’s a little bit of spice Cigar Box Cedar Wood pencil shavings there’s quite a lot going on here on the pette it’s intense so here you can really feel the grip the tenants coming from caban s really coat your mouth and

Grip on your gums but in a in a nice way there’s concentration on the mid pallet and fresh and vibrant finish you know caban on its own in most regions even in bordo doesn’t really bring the power and concentration on the pallet that’s why they usually blend in some Meo to give

The wine a little bit more body and this is what this feels like so it feels like a bordo blend a blend between cabet s Meo and maybe cabet Fran malbeck and pyo as well blending those great varieties just makes the experience much more enjoyable some people think that only

Single varietal wines can be great but that’s obviously not true in Bodo it really helps that they blend in different elements in order to produce a really complete wine even though this shows some signs of aging it is not at all at its end I think this can age for

Another 10 15 years easily and I’m going to rate this 95 points a delicious wine and I’m also going to say that this is from bordo I think for me it feels a bit like a San could be puak as well but yeah I I just think this is probably a

Really good quality s junor and given that I put the previous wine in Sania as well that’s probably one one of them probably isn’t but anyways I’m I’m going to say this is San a really great wine so let’s move on to Wine number five oh no you know this happens very

Rarely in those tastings but this is definitely CED it’s just super smelly it smells like damp cardboard and I don’t think that I’m really going to get anything out of this wine yeah this sucks I hope this is not the expensive wine because that would be

A lot of money down the drain but this is just terrible the essence of cork that’s that’s what this smells like so last but not least we have wine number six interesting so wine number six is actually quite a bit paler than the previous ones it shows some signs of

Browning but it’s definitely more see-through so did Leon sneak in a pirate a wine made from a different grape variety let’s find out even though the color is light the flavor and texture just aren’t the flavor is quite concentrated and Rich there’s claim de CIS flavors blackberry jam notes on the

Palette it’s actually rich and concentrated they are tenants but they are really well polished and it finish is long but really concentrated so this also feels like there’s 14 and 1 12 15% alcohol richness concentration density but well made given that I said that the great variety of those wines is probably

Cabinet s i I’ll go straight to Napa I mean this just has the body and richness that you get in Napa from kaban s the great thing about Napa is that you really don’t need to blend in other varietals they do blend in other varietals but they can usually use much

More cabinet because it just tends to bring in this fruit flavor but also the body the middle middle pallet element that usually has to be contributed by Mero and other regions comes straight from cabet when you’re in Napa so a really complete juicy rich and bold

Bread I’m going to rate this 94 points and yeah I think it’s it’s delicious it’s time for the big reveal I must say I’m not 100% confident when it comes to the origin of those wines but I’m pretty sure that Cabernet is in the mix and well before I embarrass

Myself even further let’s just let’s just look what’s inside the backs so wi number one I thought was delicious I didn’t actually say what it was so maybe I just give it another sniff interesting I mean this actually is also quite bold and Rich appears to

Be from a warmer climate this could also be Napa it could also be somewhere like Argentina or a warm place in South Africa or Australia it also could be like a super tuskin blend quite a bold and Rich red I’m just going to say Tuscany it’s quite it’s quite warm in

The finish so there’s a little bit of alal there but yeah I’m going to say super tuskin but let’s have a look shall we all right the first fail of the tasting it is from Argentina from mendosa so I think I said Argentina I mean it definitely had the

Concentration and richness I don’t actually know what the blend is here but I it says on the back label 54% cabet Sor 22 Malbec 18 cabet Fran and six ptiv door so this is a Cabernet based wine pretty rich and bold style but but yeah good stuff so let’s move on to Wine

Number two I think I said this is from Chile and I did like it it was a little bit lighter and more red fruited but good stuff and it is it is from Chile I don’t know this wine I think it’s called betic V de Vino Los compes deal 2022 pretty

Pretty pretty solid quite juicy elegant fresh good stuff so let’s move on on to the next and I thought this was great a little bit more aged and I put this into sanan in bordo just like the next one so let’s find out ah no way I was so wrong

Here so this is aged it’s the 2016 Mount Eden Vineyard cabinet Sor from the Santa Cruz mountains delicious wine not so bold and Rich but more more refined really good so now I’m getting nervous let’s see whether I was actually right here I thought this was from bordo just

Like this one but anyways San also a little bit more aged oo not too bad so this is the 2016 pishon Baron from poak but it’s actually right on the border to sanan so I I don’t feel too bad about that great wine probably the most expensive WI I’ll

Reveal the prices in a minute but but yeah really good stuff so this one came straight from CK town I mean I’ve have no idea what what this was because it was so so CED let’s have a look oh 2016 Tron Lon from s so this was also from

Bordo but yeah I mean I wasn’t able to tell I think this is just really bad badly cked a shame so now wine number six I actually thought it was from Napa but given that this one is also from California the third wine I’m guessing that it’s probably not let’s let’s let’s

See bulgary okay so this is the Poo Alo from BG 2020 delicious wine really juicy bold and Rich but not from Napa so this was a very nice lineup of cabet based Blends the pon was clearly the most expensive one at €175 the Mount Eden did cost €100 and

The cheapest one was the buery at €25 which is a great bargain the other three were all around3 so there was quite a big difference here in terms of price not necessarily in terms of quality interestingly the most expensive wine and the cheapest wine were actually the

Highest scoring wines which goes to show that you don’t have to spend a lot of money in order to get great Wine Into Your Glass so thank you for watching I hope you enjoyed this video if you did then please like it down here subscribe to my channel if you haven’t done so

Already my question of the day is what is your favorite bargain Cabernet blend let me know Down Below in the comments but whatever you do stay Thirsty he

  1. I had a couple of weeks ago, a Chateau Deyrem Valentin 2018,from Margaux, which was corked. I have another 4 bottles of it, but I drank one yesterday and it was not corked.

  2. Best bargain Cab.? There are a lot. You can find bargains in practically all over the place except for USA and Australia. Top four places for Cab. bargains: Bordeaux, Tuscany, Argentina, Chile.

  3. I occasionally pay up to about $50 USD for a bottle but rarely higher. I’d guess my average these days is around $30. Most reds under that amount and most whites under $20 these days usually aren’t worth it. I’d rather have a good beer than a mediocre, boring or lousy wine.

  4. Really enjoyed this video! On my own, without recommendations, I tend to gravitate toward Paso Robles, CA to get the most bang for my buck. I really like Bordeaux but, when entertaining, people here in Arizona really prefer the big California taste.

  5. Fun video! San Leonardo’s second wine “Terre” for 25$ in the US is the best value for me. I also like to pick up the second wines of classified Bordeaux estates when i can find them with some age. 2012 prieure lichine confidences was great.

  6. Yeeeessss you finally tried Poggio al Tesoro! Every bordeaux blend video you post I comment about it. Great value Bolgheri and Sondraia (Il Seggio’s big bro) is one of my favs. Il Seggio is fantastic as well, I mean… 94p for 25 euros is nuts

  7. Chile has some great bargain Cabernets, and Languedoc, but I love Coonawara for that pure cassis character at low prices.

  8. Los Vascos Gran Reserva Cab from Chile is a great value IMHO. You can find it for about 20 USD. Love your content Konstantin. Keep up the good work!

  9. These blends are a great way to happen upon delicious bargains. Most New World red wine blends are relatively reliable so if you pay just a SOUPCON over rock bottom, occasionally you will happen upon a noble and delicious bottle of fruity wine, enough to make very glad the heart..
    Nice one Konstantin. 🍷🌟👍

  10. The most fun thing about these expensive vs cheap wine videos is that you can literally do them over and over again and you'll never run out of different wines across all sorts of price points to compare. It will always be relevant and entertaining.

    Thanks!

  11. Maybe it would be worth to discuss also the development potential for each of these wines. As mentioned the Pichon should have at least 10 years ahead (2016 was a great vintage), therefore right now (2024) might not be at its peak. On the contrary the most simple Bolgheri might be ready and at its peak right now. In other words, once comparing the quality/value of the wines, we should probably compare them in the same context, for example comparing them at their “peak” of development. It is understood that this won’t be easy to be done on video since it adds another complexity in selecting not just different wines but also different specific vintages. Anyway great video as usual!!!

  12. I love your blind tasting videos. It would help if you added details of the wines in the description panel, it would save lots of pausing to establish what the wines actually are 😊

  13. Ha, great! The Bordeaux varietals video. Thank you now I got new wines to hunt. Also Pauillac provides my current favourite wine, Chateau Clerc Milon

  14. Was bei den Blind Tastings cool wäre, wenn es eine Art Notiz mit den vorher genannten Facts + Punktzahl und später Punktzahl beim Endfazit
(z.B. über den Flaschen) mit Preisen geben würde.

  15. Nothing is more important when purchasing wine than QPR. Regardless of the consumer's palate or level of "sophistication" with regard to wine complexity; if the price is ridiculous, it is difficult to enjoy the wine. Consumption of wine is on the downward slide in may countries and most of all in the EU. The cost of wine production will soon outstrip it's appeal leding to a further decline in interest and consumption especially in those countries which place an enormous tax on it. For example, in Canada, the government even taxes the shipping cost placed in a case of wine. Its completely ridiculous and out of control!

  16. I've been buying and cellaring wines for well over 40 years and this video is the essence of enjoying wine. I've opened and poured wines that were stunningly expensive, but finding wines that are enjoyable and affordable on a daily basis is my on going wine quest. The added benefit is that when I identify a exceptionally well made wine at a value price, it's time to share this information with my other wine friends. I often host a "Kissing Frogs" wine gatherings where I gather inexpensive wines and blind taste them with friends to see if one of them is a "Prince". It's great fun and sometimes a surprising "Prince" is found.
While I subscribe to many wine channels, your content is the best that I've found.

  17. It's grape juice, you know grapes. stepped on bottled ,fancy label ……maybe put in a cask ,Yawn. left in the Dark to get character ,herpes, a beard ,,whoa ,, well anyways it gets me drunk and the Government lots of Tax

  18. I have a video suggestion. Would you please give your opinion as to the benefits of real corks for ageworthy red wines? I've heard that they allow a miniscule amount of air into the bottle, but also that they are so long as to not allow any air in, even over decades of cellaring. Do corks play a beneficial role in ageing wines, particularly the top Bordeaux reds and port? I am traditional and like corks for old reds, but if they don't matter in reality I will have to change my opinion.

  19. Me and my family have enjoyed an Ernest burn Grand cru Goldert muscat vendange tardive , one of the best vineyards in the world from one of the best makers in Alsace. It cost me £26 when I purchased it from the cellar, I’ve tasted chateau d’yquem at the winery , it was delicious, but the Goldert was far better and much more complex. Great video 👍🏻

  20. Great video, as always. I think my favourite is Tignanello in this case, but I also love the Passi di Orma. They differ much in price. Tignanello has been around for some time and always with good quality. Passi di Orma is newer and isn t made to be on the same pedistal as Tignanello. I reckon producers test the market to see the demand of their product. I wonder how much a wine scribent such as Parker or Suckling can influence the price?
Thanks again and dont forget to drink water ; )

  21. One can often partly save a corked wine by scrunching up a bunch of plastic wrap and sticking it into the bottle. After a day or two, the wine will likely be decent, if not as it should be…

  22. Not at all surprising about Mount Eden's performance and likeness to Bordeaux. Their wines, both red & white, always stump me in blinds. In fact, many producers from Santa Cruz Mountains come off as old world in blinds. Cheers to Mount Eden, really high quality stuff!

  23. Nice one 🙂
My favourite bargain Bordeaux Blend is from Trapiche in Argentina, at around $23.
The best single varietal Cab Sauv I have ever tasted was last Christmas (2014 Heitz Cellar, from Napa Valley)

  24. Nowadays there is technology enough to make a wine as good as the best and with a reasonable price, just cooking into the winery because the law it’s quite different regarding from which country the wine comes, so today the experience being nice doesn’t make any sense, many thanks for your videos and information

  25. This was an excellent video. It's a real testament to what makes wine so interesting. Bravo Konstantin. Can we have more of this, please?
    Tony

  26. I buy and drink across the range, a bottle that delivers more than its price tag is really not that cheap, because you have to drink a lot of not nice bottles at the same price to find it! So the all-in cost is not lower

  27. Kannst du nicht endlich mal ein Video machen in dem Weine ab 6-7 Euro drin sind? 25 Euro ist kein "Bargain" das ist ein halber Wocheneinkauf.

  28. Excellent tasting Konstantin! Pichon Baron is one of my favorite Bordeaux wines. Number 6 seemed one to seek out. Cheers 🥂
