About Vero:
Did you know that less than 1% of wines make it to US retailers’ shelves? At Vero, which means “real” in Italian, we are constantly looking for small production, sustainably made, authentic wines from farmer-artisans not yet present in the US market. Our mission is to create a community of wine and food lovers, small producers and businesses where passion is the common denominator.
Hi there and welcome I’m Jacqueline fero and if you’ve been following our Channel and blog for a while you will know by now that our mission is to explore the world in search for rare craft wines made with passion and dedication by farmer Artisans and this also means that
We have a very special predel for rare and Indigenous grape varieties that are being saved from Oblivion by Visionary wine makers and today we’re going to go off the beaten path and discover a great example of such grapes one that you might not have ever heard of before UA
Tosa and if the name tosa rings a bell it might be because of it’s a famous opera by the Italian composer Jak Pini and in case you’re wondering no uosa has nothing to do with the Opera but as we will discover its traits have indeed some resemblance of the main character
Of the play so let’s dive in and learn all about UA tosa let’s start from its home to find out where it is we first need to consider the main trait that sets uosa apart from a lot of other Italian varieties specifically it’s one of the very few Italian red grapes that
Can fully ripen at higher elevations even reaching between 700 and 900 M which is to say a whopping 2,600 ft in elevation so uosa is a Survivor a grape that defies expectations and harsh conditions just like the apotamus main character of the Opera by jakamo Pini all right so uosa likes high elevations
And specifically it likes those of the high Val Del seia we are in the heart of the appenine mountains in North Central Italy the region is Amilia Roman and the province is moda famous for bomic vinegar and sports cars Amelia Romana is a noteworthy region for wine lovers
Mainly for its refreshing low alcohol sparkling lamb brusos however the various Lambrusco varieties that are so widespread in the surrounding areas cannot fully mature at those particularly high elevations of the valley Del this is where uosa has the edge as it’s the only variety that will grow fully to its full potential there
It’s sparse thick skinned grayish red berries produce wines with a unique character it’s mostly used in Blends taking a back seat as a smaller percentage in wines but it can also make a very unique wine when it’s used as a standalone single variety when vinified by itself you can expect a light bodied
Wine that’s bursting with Aromas of red fruits like cherries plums and strawberries but there’s also some hints of spice and black pepper also the medium tannins that these wines have make them incredibly food friendly One Winery that is trying to push the boundaries with uosa is Fano this small
Organic woman-owned Winery in the Moda province is at an altitude of approximately 1,500 ft and is dedicated to Reviving this forgotten grape and their Fano pet is a prime example of U toa’s potential when vinified alone this frante wine made with the ancestral method petnat is a delightful expression
Of the uat TOA grape technically it’s a rosé wine but it’s really got a light red color which looks and tastes like drinking cranberry juice as a sparkling wine refreshing and also sippable with strawberries on the nose and a saline finish it’s great on its own but it’s
Also a wonderful choice for somewh a Pao or to sip alongside lighter fair and Munchies uosa may be a niche grape but it’s a testament to Italy’s incredible viticultural diversity in a world dominated by big bold Reds uosa offers a refreshing alternative it’s a wine for those who appreciate elegance and
Subtlety so that’s it for today you can find scarb online in the veros shop at vino.com I’ll have the link in the description below if you were interested and trying an uosa wine for yourself thank you for watching and if you liked this video give it a like and a
Subscribe cuz there might be more about Fano coming up if you want to learn more about wine you can continue watching our videos and specifically this one about another great lesser known variety I’ll see you with the next video bye
