The Guide to Wine Collecting: Start With the Classics
[gentle music] – Well, when it comes to starting a wine collection, you first really need to figure out what you like. I really think that one way people can start to jump in to trying different wine styles and therefore learning what they like is to think about the seasons.
So when summertime rolls around, think two things. Dry rose which is the perfect mix of white wine refreshment with red wine complexity and then German Riesling. They’re delicious when they’re young and refreshing, but they also aged well in the cellar. Then when wintertime rolls around and we’ve got comfort food and cozy sweaters,
It’s a great time to try the rustic reds of Europe, especially Italian and Spanish reds. And when springtime comes, the farmers markets are alive with fresh produce. So that’s a perfect opportunity to try the crisp, fresh whites of the world. My favorites, Toronto’s from Argentina and the Sauvignon Blanc grape from Saint-Sernin, France,
Or New Zealand, or right here in California, delicious with the bright flavors of spring. So now that we’ve got your seasonal wine calendar figured it all out, don’t be afraid to start with the classics. Classics are classic for a reason. They’re rooted in authenticity, they’re descendant from some of the most
Legendary wine styles and regions in the world, and you can really go back to that and always know that you’ve got one of the great benchmark styles for your cellar.
