Sasaka and orolia are among the most sought-after the most expensive tuskin wines made from Bordeaux grape varieties they’re wonderful wines the only thing that’s not wonderful about them is the price both of them retail anywhere from $250 to $300 that’s if you can find them they are among two of the first Super
Tuskin wines that term is actually not an official term however super tuskin is a colloquial term back in the 1960s when the Italian government was trying to model the Italian docc docg system basically Appalachians after the French system in Tuscany for some reason a lot of regions like kanteti required that
Sanesi be blended with white grapes there were producers that wanted to make 100% sanjo some even wanted to grow Kev 7on Mero Kev Fran that was not allowed under the Italian Appalachian system sasaka came out in the late 60s oralia was released in the early 80s those
Wines had to be sold under Veno davala which means table wine the lowest classification of wine those wines started selling for more than the Italian Appalachian wines which was a little bit uncomfortable for the Italian government in the 1990s the Italian government came up with this IGT system
Called Tuscana IGT to kind of solve that didn’t have as much cache with consumers critics started to dub these real high-end highly scored wines as super tuskin there is no definition of what a super tuskin is sometimes you see wines that are 100% sany sometimes you see
Sanio VY blended with Bordeaux grapes or full-on Bordeaux Blends in this video we’re going to taste super tuskin that are Bordeaux Blends there is a history of appreciation of these varieties in Tuscany Ian diea a really famed Italian wine riter recently wrote an article saying that in the 1940s Italian
Nobility they weren’t drinking Tuscan wines they were drinking French wines there’s a small Appalachian called Carano it’s near Florence in Tuscany it’s the first appalation in Italy to not only allow but require CERN Savon to be Blended in with the San ofc the consortio at Carano claims that kernet 7
Yan was actually there as early as the 16th century a lot of purist even some of my white writing friends hate the idea of French varieties in Tuscany I do think that French varieties like K7 Merlo C Fran petite verox taste a little bit different in Italy I actually have
An upcoming video about the second wines of Bordeaux versus the second wines of Tuscany so you’re going to want to watch out for that I usually find that Tuscan Boro Blends have this certain tanginess I don’t know what it is it could be the terroir also it could be the wine making
Italians like a little more acidity it goes with the Tomato based dishes and they like these espresso likee tannin I think that they’re a little bit different the ones in Bordeaux can be hard sometimes or even a little more chewy there are a lot of values to be
Found because a lot of producers in Tuscany are making super tuskin look for Tuscana IGT when you’re were there in Italy I found some wonderful ones where was low as 15 bucks however here today we’re tasting five alternatives to sasaka oraya these are these are expensive wines anywhere from about $55
To $150 and I know they’re expensive but when you consider the price of oron sesaki the price doesn’t look so bad all of a sudden I’m ready to treat myself got my wannabe wine maker vest on I’m ready to go to work let’s taste some wines some big time wines tasting out of
A big time glass I have my Gabriel glass Gold Edition these are handblown glasses lighter than a zalto the only problem is they’re not always readily available I do have a link for the standard edition which is a lot cheaper a lot of people have purchased it like it I’ll put that
Link in the description box helps the channel if you purchase with that link so thanks a lot I’m actually pretty stoked let’s go on to number one here the room smells like grape power raid grape Gatorade these are fresh super tuskin wines I think the Vintage is
Range everywhere from 2018 all the way to 2021 these are young these are wines that are meant to be laid down in the seller however I do find that super tusin wines can be approached pretty young they’re delicious but if you want some of those age notes you want to put
Them down the Celler for a little bit let’s get started wine one really nice right off the bat grally it has just a hint of capsicum not lir Cabernet Fran bell pepper but just a touch black cherry just a touch a mocha like leather tobacco these wines are already complex even when
Young really nice this smells more Bordeaux than it does tusin let’s see on the palette here’s the thing this really acts like a Left Bank Bordeaux in terms of flavor on the palette even usually I find tuskin wines to be more voluptuous however the tannin are espresso likee
Which would tip me off in a blind tasting that maybe this is super tuskin the Finish is incredibly long here that’s good wine let’s move on to two two just has a hint of vol little acidity that basic type note that you get with sometimes some Italian wines oh
But still got a really deep deep deep black cherry note got a little bit of soil has real shiny mineral notes this to me smells a little bit like a Santa million Grand crew Santa million Grand crew great wine from the right Bank of Bordeaux more
Based on Mero has this kind of shiny wet stone mineral quality to it so that’s why I think it is wow has really wonderful flavors long fit this is big round voluptious I have no doubt that this has got a high por of are low in it I did know what these
Wines were beforehand but I Cor in them like always had somebody mix them up for me I did write down all the percentages of grape varieties here I would be hard pressed if this isn’t not heavily based on more low it’s voluptuous got a nice mouth feel 10is around it’s a bigger
Wine now I think a lot of people are going to like two more than one one is more my style but I think it’s very good let me take a head of that it’s one on the three three is a young one this is a baby super young it got kind of
Like this grassy note to it along with a red plum not not a pruny flavor but a red plum of kind of a red red cherry type component a little bit of black licorice these are quite different like one had more leather tobacco two was more Mero had that gry tasting three
Right here has more of a licorice type note right now it’s not drinking as well as two or one in terms of immediate enjoyment but man there are some big time Tans it’s structured I mean this is a super serious wine it’s good stuff three is a baby this is the type
Of wine you lay down for 10 years what can happen a lot of times with these super serious wines they can be fruity sometimes up front like sometimes some Napa cabs that baby fat that fruit falls off or sometimes that fruit can be hidden and it takes a while to express
Itself with other complexities that’s really good wine I mean I was ready to taste some serious wines today and these did not dis these are not disappointing so far four has tons of soy sauce I actually just cooked up a rice dish used some soy sauce a couple hours ago comes
Right out at me the soy sauce is like a ton like a miso soy sauce component it’s covering a little bit the sour cherry black cherry type notes this is really Savory hold on a sec this is a thinking wine super super Savory this is bright
Has like this nice tinge of acidity okay here’s the thing I have to be real these are all dough Blends I stuck one wine in here that has a little bit of sanas a grape that you know I love just to see if I could pick it out the acidity the
Hard TS here makes me think that this is the San that’s just what I think we’ll see if I was right old school tusin wine good number five oh five is serious very serious I I think I could tell that this is Bordeaux it’s got some Tangerine peel
Along with the black cherry plum masiano Cherry this has got like a raw High leather component to it mouth coating very espresso like tannin this is a wine that you really have to think on I got to check again with mine three usually I think a super tuskin Wine’s ready right
Out of the gate three and five so far are wines that are quite shy but they you can tell they’re super serious you ready for the reveal these are very very very serious wines a lot of these wines I think you need to lay down for quite some time
Honestly we’ll go from lowest score to highest score like always number four the soy sauce Savory has the acidity remember I it was really Savory really like miso soup soy sauce along with those black fruit components highest acidity out of all of them remember I
Stuck one in with San vas and I think this is it now here’s the thing I don’t think it’s all come together yet I think it still needs some time but I gave it 93 points I think it’s serious very serious stuff let’s take a look here
This this is not the wine with a lot of sany in it this is the tanut setti ponti oreno 20121 I did say maybe I thought three was the youngest this is 120 bucks 50% mer low 40% ke7 y 10% petite Vero have been to the estate before beautiful
Estate had some older vintages of this wine it comes along really nice 120 bucks I know it’s not cheap another thing about t setic ponti their second wine they call creno that actually has sanovas and Kern 7on in that’s like a $30 $40 wine if you can’t afford the Aro
I recommend buying the creno you get some of the house style at a more affordable price although if price is of No Object get some of these lay it down 2021 to this is a baby not even ready to really be drunk yet but usually this is
A crowd favorite and it just ages beautifully 93 points let’s move on number one I think is the only wine in this set that I actually really want to drink right now I didn’t score at the highest but it’s more my style it was Bordeaux nose palette the only thing
That tip me off it might be Italian was the the tannins were really nice had these nice espresso likee tannins lots of leather which I’m a sucker for tobacco 93 plus points it’s already super complex you ready to see what it is let’s see if it’s a San vas one I didn’t
Get that right this is the tanut linia this is the Sasa deata 2019 $76 I think this is near areto I think this is near pretty close to setti ponti so we’re talking about the southeast corner of Tuscany where it’s a little bit lower elevation the hills come down
From KY clco 70% CERN 7on 25% Kern fron I got some of the leafiness remember 5% petite Vero which also can be Savage 76 bucks gorgeous label really reminds me of lefit rosch child or a Bru and Napa the only thing is this WI not easy to
Find I think this is gorgeous I actually want to drink this tonight that is delicious stuff I don’t know a ton about that producer they just randomly sent me some wines and that wine is good I want to drink it right now okay couple more serious wines here number five rawh hide
Leather deep rich full this is the wine for a lot of people like expensive Napa cabs malbecks real serious stuff rich full the Rawhide leather really got to me I gave it 9 4 points but this wine is not ready to drink right now you lay
This bad boy down still super serious 94 points serious one this is I didn’t get I didn’t get it this is the only one that has a little bit some sanes this is the P capaia Tuscana IGT this is 50% kernet 7on 25% kernet Fran 25% sanjio V
Similar blend to the famous antinori salaya this comes in at 60 bucks 2019 fantastic vintage in Tuscany in a lot of Europe for that matter it’s from the village of Rada which is probably my favorite Village in kianti clco high elevation some really really well-renowned producers in Rada I think
That wine is outstanding but man 2019 it’s a baby delicious but man you need some time let’s move on the top two here number two 94 plus points it’s a little bit more approachable now I thought it was heavily Mero based it had really that stain ailon to it a lot of graphite
On the back end I do think it has a lot of Mero but you know I could be fo that’s why blind tasting is funny 94 plus points I think this is a killer wine and it doesn’t have a lot of Mero man that’s what power of blind tasting
This is the mat UTA belardo Mara Toscano Roso Reserva $64 85% K7 yon 15% % Cabernet FR 2018 so this is ready to drink right now this is a steel marma it’s in the southwest corner of Tuscany used to be a marsh that’s where you get Mor alino
Disano it’s a clone of sanesi but you get a lot of Bordeaux Blends at really affordable prices and I think this is 94 plus I think this is a heck of wine at $64 that’s really good it has to me like C million right Bank more low based wine
Sometimes are easier to drink younger that’s the beauty of tusin Cabernet 7on 85% cab it’s ready to go right away I just think a lot of people are going to enjoy that the top wine had the most licorice I remember I said it wasn’t showing its
Best I but I could tell on the palette there was just tons of concentration tons of complexity it was long I thought this was a wine that man it has a big big big future 95 points so most expensive wine in a bunch this is the tanut bno 2020 this is a
Blend of 32% Cabernet Fran 32% cernet Savon 30% Mero 6% petite Vero 150 bucks this is the wine of lovo antinori who started the project orolia this was his project after he sold orolia you kind of see some of that story in a documentary mondovino if you’re interested in this I know lovo
Likes a lot of Cabernet Fran maybe that’s why it wasn’t just as fruity early on I know he makes a super super high-end wine made of 100% Cabernet fan that’s like $300 a bottle 150 bucks I know that’s not cheap but that is a heck of a wine so tell me do
You have any other affordable alternatives to sasaka or nayia have you tried any of these wines before what do you think of Bordeaux grapes and tusky I’d love to hear drop it in the comments below

Bordeaux blends definitely taste different in Tuscany. I think in part it’s the ripeness in Tuscany, plus the rustic edge on these wines from the “garrigue” like notes (rosemary, thyme, oregano). I was surprised that Oreno scored lowest here, did it get some breathing time? Just too young probably.
Orma is a great alternatieve, but you have discussed it before 😄
The 2nd wine of Tenuta San Guido, Guidalberto, is a fantastic value at around $50 and is much more approachable in its youth than its older brother Sassicaia.
I’m also a big fan of Ornellaia’s Le Volte as a reliable crowd-pleasing wine and I feel it far outperforms its $25 price tag. I’ve yet to try the other bottling of Ornellaia called Le Serre Nuove since I haven’t seen it in any stores, but I hear it’s great too and a step above Le Volte.
Yep, all very expensive for what you get. Seriously, it's far too expensive. I've recently started buying Italian wine from a small shop in South Wales owned by a Master of Wine that specialises in Italian wine. His recommendations have been a revelation and I've tasted great wine from all over the country at great value.
this to me is one of the most important segments youve ever done.SASSICAIA AND ORNELLIA are so fabulous its hard to find anything remotely close to them . The ORMA toscana is close and a great value. Will try the others now
What about Saffredi and Orma?
The Cappaccio sounds delicious.
Can’t get many Supers here in Australia unfortunately.
Sondraia is great. Also Prima Pietra by Castiglion del Bosco is a great affordable option!
Great wines! Prices are about 30% more here so out of my price range but great reviews. Those grapes seem to have that edge that they do not in France, being acidity, tannins or minerality.
I tell you what Dr. H …. I've had so much red wine for the past 6 months I'm ready for a white wine kick. I still have 20+ bottles of all red wine I need to work through. But a punch-in-the-face blend or malbec would be a nice change in constant stream of Cab and Merlot. My dad went kinda nuts with the wine "deals". 😅
I have a few bottles of the 2018 Oreno. I'm looking forward to pulling a cork pretty soon. Enjoyed the video, I'll for a couple of these.
I agree with you, the best super tuscans to me are the ones with sangiovese added…. Mmm, delicious. Great vid.
Want more Super Tuscans??? https://youtu.be/AUGP6TusIP4?si=TOiMHqgP4QYke9wF
Great stuff, I really like Luce. That's one of my very favorite on that region. What do you think about that particular one ?
Hey Dr Matthew, would you go for a Cervaro della Sala 2019 or Gaja Ca Marcanda Promis 2021?
Enjoy your shows Doc. How about the Chiappini range and esp Guado Di Gemoli. And the top with from Tenuta Argentiera as well
Super epizod Matthew 👍. Wines from Michele Satta (Piastraia, Cavaliere and I Castagni) were super and from Podere Sapaio were also really good. Most recently, I really enjoy Poggio al Tesoro´s Il Seggio. Verry affordable in EU.
Capaccia the best one ever! Thanks Mat!!
The Villa Donoratico (Tenuta Argentiera) is excellent value for money. Other affordable 'Super Tuscans' are Terra di Monteverro, Camalaione (Podere Le Cinciole), Orma (Podero Orma) and Concerto di Fonterutoli. It would be interesting tot do a video about Morellino di Scansano: an underrated appellation.
Great video Matthew thanks for the recommendations and I picked up a few more in the comments.
I almost dont drink Super Tuscans (more so if bordeaux blends are the recipe)….in Tuscany my money goes to Chianti Classico and Brunello. One cannot go in all directions (no space nor money for such). Im happy to be offered to try but its not on my shopping list. As usual a Nice episode. Would love to see a Bairrada/Baga tasting vídeo.
Thank you, Matthew, a very interesting and exciting video! There are a lot of great value Toscana IGT wines here. I hope we will have a chance to have you taste some of Aiola new releases later this year.
Love your channel. I’m very curious why you didn’t choose other Super Tuscans from the same terroir (Bolgheri) as Sassicaia and Ornellaia. Super Tuscans produced over 160km away are going to be completely different than the well known two. Bolgheri is a very special terroir that has similarities to Bordeaux.
Just curious because I Love Bolgheri wines and only live 20-25 mins from the area
Last year I had a lot of second and third wines from the Super Tuscan producers. I focused (and maybe they focus) on blends that usually had mostly Merlot with Sangiovese. I loved them all. Allison Slute made the (really smart) argument that those are actually good values since they are comparable to second and third wines from Bordeaux. My favourite of the bunch was Tenuta Luce's 2018 Lucente, but I loved Rocca di Frassinello's 2016 Poggio Alla Guardia and Le Volte Dal'Ornellaia from 2020. Honestly, I had a lot of fun with the cheaper ones as well, as Brancaia's TRE is one of my go-to wines and San Polo's Rubio from 2018 was delicious, and I will be seeking it as the vintages come.
About Sette Ponti, I have the second and third wines available. One is Sangiovese and the other is a Bordeaux Blend, and there is a significant difference in price from one to the other. Which one should I go for?
Nice tasting as is always the case.
Biserno retails for almost 200EUR, wouldn’t call it an attractive cheaper alternative, or at least not anymore
I drink regularly different Bordeaux blends from Bolgheri area. My absolute favourite price/quality ratio is Grattamacco (around 80 EUR today). On top of that I would recommend Ca’ Marcanda Magari (around 50EUR), Guado al Tasso (around 110EUR), Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso (around 25EUR). Unfortunately most of those have doubled the prices in the last 5-6 years 😞
In terms of Sangiovese blend with cab from Maremma I would rather recommend Avvoltore from Morisfarms: great quality for 45EUR
Not sure if you've tried it but Le Pupille Maremma Toscana Saffredi is a fantastic alternative (at least for me) to some of these much more expensive wines.
"Try not to become a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value." -Albert Einstein
Great video as always! I'm a big fan of cab franc, do you have any recommendations for a high percentage or 100% cab franc from Tuscany for under or ~$50?
Great video, have to hunt for a couple of those that aren’t available in my country. My favourites so far as alternatives are saffredi, Mazzei Siepi and sondraia. On the cheaper end of the spectrum, Caccia al piano- Levia Gravia was good, and two cheaper Antinori buys – Cont’ugo and Il bruciato have been regulars here. Keep the Italian videos coming 😂
Great video, id take bordeaux over super tuscans any day but i recently tried the wines of chiappini in bolgheri and was delighted! Corzano e paterno in chianti make a wine called “il corzano” which is also lovely.
Can you recommend me any wines like Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto? I really enjoyed it recently
Super Tuscans are a great category and a nice twist on Right & Left Bank Bordeaux. As you mentioned the price is continually headed north, so these wines are for those with deeper pockets. I believe if you head south in Italy, like Campania, Puglia, Sicily and maybe Calabria, you can find Bordeaux blends with local varieties at much lower price points. These wines should be put away for at least 5–6 years, if not 10. IMHO, only light reds like Zweigelt, Beaujolais Villages, and similar wines can be drunk 2 or 3 years after the vintage. Great video and lots of fun. Cheers!
Just get an Italian villa already and move to Tuscany. Be careful of anyone, especially a guy named Vito, offering you a “deal” on some rare wine he happened to find.
The only problem with this video is that I immediately wanted to go out and buy some of this Tuscan pearls … lol ! Cheers !
another great video 🤓
I couldn’t help but chuckle at the captions on your video replacing the word “appellation” with Appalachian”! Now I love Appalachia but not sure I would grow wine grapes in much of that part of the world! Although, I must say, Virginia in particular has some excellent wines and particularly whites.
Tenuta Argentiera only 1/3 price of sassicaia maybe ? lol
I just drank the Tenuta Belgvardo 2016 from Mazzei recently. Great wine. But compared to another and actually the first super Tuscan wine Vigorello from San felice I think Vigorello is a better buy. It's much cheaper here and in my opinion the quality is around the same.
