Hello, Gismondi on Wine? Uh, subscribers,ย newsletter subscribers. Thanks for joiningย ย us today, uh, to preview the 45th Internationalย Wine Festival in Vancouver. Joining us is Filippoย ย Bartolotta. He’s the he’s a writer, educator andย will be the keynote speaker in Vancouver duringย ย
The festival. And also Harry Hertscheg,ย the executive director of the uh 45th,ย ย which is impressive. Vancouver Internationalย Wine Festival. Harry, welcome back. Uh,ย ย we’re back in Vancouver. We’re back in VCC East. Uh, we’re back in February. Uh, we’re back toย ย
Normal. We’re back. It’s our third festival since. the pandemic, our 45th since we started this wholeย ย journey way back in 1979. We’re back inย the convention center, the West building,ย ย with all the great windows, with 149ย wineries, 42 events. Italy is going toย ย
Be the star at the end of February. Let’s go. Yeah. So well let’s talk about those numbers.ย ย So 12 countries are coming. How many wineries andย wines are going to be in the room do you think?ย
Well the way I look at it is how how excitingย is it to be able to have 71 Italian wineries,ย ย the most we’ve ever had, plus 29 from Britishย Columbia. What a great opportunity to compareย ย Okanagan, Cowichan and Fraser Valley andย Italy, and then another 49 wineries fromย ย
Ten other countries. It’s going to be an amazingย experience in the tasting room. Of the 42 events,ย ย more than half are focused on Italy. 12ย dinners, a Gala dinner with all Italian wines,ย ย four seminars including with Filippoย Bartolotta, lunches, seminars, parties.ย It’s going to be an Italianย celebration at the end of February.ย
Get some sleep folks. There’s always a huge buzzย in the room. But Filippo, it’s my impression thatย ย that Italy is having a moment internationally.ย What, what what’s your feeling about what’sย ย going on in Italy at the moment with wine? Well, it’s a great moment. Um, and I’m totallyย ย
Excited because this is the BC-Italian Wineย Festival. Uh, it’s going to be my third timeย ย round coming over to to British Columbia andย I, And I’m loving it. I really can’t wait. Uh,ย ย Italy is in, um, how should I put it in a sort ofย a, uh, very contemporary Renaissance, uh, moment,ย ย
Like, uh, Italy has been making wine for 3000ย years. Uh, there was a moment, uh, after the war,ย ย where everything started off againย about quantity, quantity, quantity.ย Then there was a switch towards quality inย the 80s, just a few very famous wineries. Uh,ย ย
Then the big, bold, uh, super attractive,ย uh, bit of a Robert Parker rides, styleย ย wines, uh, kind of standardization in the earlyย 2000. And now is the full swing of indigenousย ย varieties. Uh, uh, tiny vignerons on that getย together with the the big established brands,ย ย
Uh, uh, all the regions of Italy from Sicily,ย uh, which is basically Africa is closer to theย ย rest of Italy, all the way up to Alto Adige,ย which is a mountain region close to Austria,ย ย is just, uh, like, uh, 20 different languages. And as a result, you have 400 different grapeย ย
Varieties. Italy is hell and Paradise at once.ย It’s hell if you want to learn all about it,ย ย quickly it’s Paradise if you have, you know,ย a life journey ahead of you and you want toย ย enjoy it. Yeah.ย
Uh, well, I was thinking about the room with theย 71 wineries. Now, of course, we always hear aboutย ย Tuscany and Piedmont, but what would be someย of the other regions you would push people to,ย ย to just think about when they’re there, and maybeย some of the grapes that that are grown there?ย
Yeah. As I mentioned, you know, uh, Italy has gotย 80% of the Italian appellations are made with 80ย ย different grape varieties. There are thousands,ย but there’s 80 major varieties. Sangiovese is theย ย king variety. Nebbiolo, of course, in, uh, inย Piemonte. But then you come across varieties,ย ย
Even for somebody for a senior, uh,ย wine taster or journalist like myself,ย ย I’ve been I taste 5000 once a year, andย I’ve been doing that for the past 25 years.ย And still I go to, I was in Abruzzo recently.ย We’re going to taste some fantastic wines fromย ย
Abruzzo, a region that is protected by theย Apennine mountain range. Looking at the sea,ย ย um, and there is varieties like Mantonicoย or, uh, Pecorino, Passerina, and not just theย ย Montepulciano or Trebbiano. And so this is whatย Italy is about right now. It’s about contemporaryย ย
Style winemaking, which means that all theย new generations are most of these winemakersย ย are actually, uh, professional winemakers. They’re going through university to get to thatย ย point, but they have the experience of the, uh,ย you know, family behind them, and they are sharingย ย
More best practices, practices that they’ve everย done in the past. So kind of like, uh, Yeah,ย ย it’s an interesting moment because there is moreย cultural identity shown in the wines, less as overย ย extractive styles, less internationallyย made wines. Um, but at the same time,ย ย
It’s the moment when it’s easier to read Sicily,ย uh, versus Campania or Abruzzo or Alto Adige.ย And within each region there is a moreย specific dialect, uh, that for any wineย ย lover is going to be easier to identify. Ofย course, it’s a large, uh, country. I mean,ย ย
It’s in terms of wine, it’s it’s bonkers. Butย that’s what we’re going to do in Vancouver.ย ย We’re gonna we’re gonna demystify Italy. Yeah. We love Bonkers in Vancouver. So, Filippo,ย ย there’s some interesting underlying themes thatย you’re thinking about. I know that you’re doing,ย ย
Uh, a few talks and seminars. Tell us aboutย these themes that you’re thinking about.ย Well, in a nutshell, the the most important, uh,ย theme would be the contrast between the lighterย ย style wines that are produced in Italy in theย past. There was a moment about all the winesย ย
Needed to be big and bold and, you know,ย uh, bodybuilders. But the idea that we’reย ย going to bring with the lightness is the factย that there is strength and, uh, uh, depth inย ย light wines from, uh, you know, think about,ย uh, each swallow, for instance, from Abruzzoย ย
Or from Alto Adige or even a light Sangioveseย or a beautiful, uh, Corvina from Valpolicella.ย So that is the idea. And then when you go, ofย course, the contrast is how are the Titans,ย ย the Super Tuscans, the Amarone, the barrel and theย Brunello doing right now? Are they still like theย ย
Supercharged wines, or is there a more trace ofย elegance that is actually coming into these winesย ย as well? And so the reinterpretation of Italy willย be all along. Wines like uh, Sorbara, Lambruscoย ย di Sorbara, which is a super light Japaneseย Katana, super refreshing, uh, sparkling wine.ย
A lot of people know the Lambrusco, theย the saturated, super dark Lambrusco. Soย ย we’re going to show our, uh, Britishย Columbia guests our different sidesย ย of Italy. So that’s why I’m actually veryย excited myself. I can’t wait to be there.ย
And it’s going to be fun to try some BC wines. Uh,ย you know, we have some Sangiovese here. We have weย ย have some similar styles. It’d be fun to contrastย them with everything that’s coming in from Italy.ย Yeah, absolutely. I’ve, uh, I had the opportunityย to visit last October. Uh, British Columbia,ย ย
The Okanagan Valley. I went on a canoe. Uh, youย know, like bareback horse riding and then triedย ย everything. You know, I’ve seen it all. It’sย so beautiful. And I tried a lot of the Italianย ย wines. I love the wild and free attitude thatย there is in that region. And so I can’t waitย ย
To do a compare and contrast tasting, uh, uh,ย matching food and wine, uh, with a very brandย ย new country like British Columbia and a veryย old one like Italy is going to be exciting.ย Harry, how about a couple of tips for theย people that are getting into the room,ย ย
Some of the things that are set up. What aboutย this Italian booth? How is that going to work?ย That’s a great place to start becauseย that’s where our swamis and portersย ย are going to be pouring a selection ofย Italian wines. But more importantly,ย ย
They’re going to know what’s at the 71 table.ย So you can use that. Italy’s tasting station asย ย a launching pad to the different regions, theย different grapes they can steer you to tableย ย 36 or number 47 or 68 or number four. And thenย when you go to those 71 Italian tables, that’s,ย ย
That’s like over 250, about 250 to 300 wines. Every one of those wines that are poured, everyย ย wine that you can taste is available for sale.ย You can buy it at the onsite BC liquor store.ย And get it shipped to your closeย to your house so you don’t have toย ย
Carry it home. It’s a very simple process. Oh, I love that. Hands free at the end ofย ย the night, go to the restaurants, have the winesย shipped free of charge anywhere in the province,ย ย and if you are somewhere else in the province,ย stay Vancouver Hotels.com. Book your hotelย ย
And get a free ticket to those 71 wineries. Yeah, okay, but you got to have a ticket toย ย get in. Harry, how is that all going and whereย can people go right now to get make sure thatย ย they can get somehow get into this festival. Vanwinefest.ca Tasting room tickets are on saleย ย
Now. Special events are on sale in January. Getย organized. Talk about it with your friends andย ย family, and we’ll see you at the end of February. Okay. Well thanks, Harry. Thanks, Filippo. And,ย ย uh, to our, uh, thank you, viewers. Uh, we’ve gotย a lot of Italian content planned in February. Uh,ย ย
That will be running in Gismondi on Wine. And,ย of course, uh, like Filippo, we’re tastingย ย wines every day and posting notes up through theย festival. There’ll be a lot of Italian contentย ย available for you. What to taste, where to go, andย who to meet inside the room. Thanks for joiningย ย
Us, gentlemen, and we’ll see you inside the roomย at the 45th Vancouver International Wine Festival.ย Arrivederci. Arrivederci. Ciao
