Hello, Gismondi on Wine? Uh, subscribers,Β newsletter subscribers. Thanks for joiningΒ Β us today, uh, to preview the 45th InternationalΒ Wine Festival in Vancouver. Joining us is FilippoΒ Β Bartolotta. He’s the he’s a writer, educator andΒ will be the keynote speaker in Vancouver duringΒ Β
The festival. And also Harry Hertscheg,Β the executive director of the uh 45th,Β Β which is impressive. Vancouver InternationalΒ Wine Festival. Harry, welcome back. Uh,Β Β we’re back in Vancouver. We’re back in VCC East. Uh, we’re back in February. Uh, we’re back toΒ Β
Normal. We’re back. It’s our third festival since. the pandemic, our 45th since we started this wholeΒ Β journey way back in 1979. We’re back inΒ the convention center, the West building,Β Β with all the great windows, with 149Β wineries, 42 events. Italy is going toΒ Β
Be the star at the end of February. Let’s go. Yeah. So well let’s talk about those numbers.Β Β So 12 countries are coming. How many wineries andΒ wines are going to be in the room do you think?Β
Well the way I look at it is how how excitingΒ is it to be able to have 71 Italian wineries,Β Β the most we’ve ever had, plus 29 from BritishΒ Columbia. What a great opportunity to compareΒ Β Okanagan, Cowichan and Fraser Valley andΒ Italy, and then another 49 wineries fromΒ Β
Ten other countries. It’s going to be an amazingΒ experience in the tasting room. Of the 42 events,Β Β more than half are focused on Italy. 12Β dinners, a Gala dinner with all Italian wines,Β Β four seminars including with FilippoΒ Bartolotta, lunches, seminars, parties.Β It’s going to be an ItalianΒ celebration at the end of February.Β
Get some sleep folks. There’s always a huge buzzΒ in the room. But Filippo, it’s my impression thatΒ Β that Italy is having a moment internationally.Β What, what what’s your feeling about what’sΒ Β going on in Italy at the moment with wine? Well, it’s a great moment. Um, and I’m totallyΒ Β
Excited because this is the BC-Italian WineΒ Festival. Uh, it’s going to be my third timeΒ Β round coming over to to British Columbia andΒ I, And I’m loving it. I really can’t wait. Uh,Β Β Italy is in, um, how should I put it in a sort ofΒ a, uh, very contemporary Renaissance, uh, moment,Β Β
Like, uh, Italy has been making wine for 3000Β years. Uh, there was a moment, uh, after the war,Β Β where everything started off againΒ about quantity, quantity, quantity.Β Then there was a switch towards quality inΒ the 80s, just a few very famous wineries. Uh,Β Β
Then the big, bold, uh, super attractive,Β uh, bit of a Robert Parker rides, styleΒ Β wines, uh, kind of standardization in the earlyΒ 2000. And now is the full swing of indigenousΒ Β varieties. Uh, uh, tiny vignerons on that getΒ together with the the big established brands,Β Β
Uh, uh, all the regions of Italy from Sicily,Β uh, which is basically Africa is closer to theΒ Β rest of Italy, all the way up to Alto Adige,Β which is a mountain region close to Austria,Β Β is just, uh, like, uh, 20 different languages. And as a result, you have 400 different grapeΒ Β
Varieties. Italy is hell and Paradise at once.Β It’s hell if you want to learn all about it,Β Β quickly it’s Paradise if you have, you know,Β a life journey ahead of you and you want toΒ Β enjoy it. Yeah.Β
Uh, well, I was thinking about the room with theΒ 71 wineries. Now, of course, we always hear aboutΒ Β Tuscany and Piedmont, but what would be someΒ of the other regions you would push people to,Β Β to just think about when they’re there, and maybeΒ some of the grapes that that are grown there?Β
Yeah. As I mentioned, you know, uh, Italy has gotΒ 80% of the Italian appellations are made with 80Β Β different grape varieties. There are thousands,Β but there’s 80 major varieties. Sangiovese is theΒ Β king variety. Nebbiolo, of course, in, uh, inΒ Piemonte. But then you come across varieties,Β Β
Even for somebody for a senior, uh,Β wine taster or journalist like myself,Β Β I’ve been I taste 5000 once a year, andΒ I’ve been doing that for the past 25 years.Β And still I go to, I was in Abruzzo recently.Β We’re going to taste some fantastic wines fromΒ Β
Abruzzo, a region that is protected by theΒ Apennine mountain range. Looking at the sea,Β Β um, and there is varieties like MantonicoΒ or, uh, Pecorino, Passerina, and not just theΒ Β Montepulciano or Trebbiano. And so this is whatΒ Italy is about right now. It’s about contemporaryΒ Β
Style winemaking, which means that all theΒ new generations are most of these winemakersΒ Β are actually, uh, professional winemakers. They’re going through university to get to thatΒ Β point, but they have the experience of the, uh,Β you know, family behind them, and they are sharingΒ Β
More best practices, practices that they’ve everΒ done in the past. So kind of like, uh, Yeah,Β Β it’s an interesting moment because there is moreΒ cultural identity shown in the wines, less as overΒ Β extractive styles, less internationallyΒ made wines. Um, but at the same time,Β Β
It’s the moment when it’s easier to read Sicily,Β uh, versus Campania or Abruzzo or Alto Adige.Β And within each region there is a moreΒ specific dialect, uh, that for any wineΒ Β lover is going to be easier to identify. OfΒ course, it’s a large, uh, country. I mean,Β Β
It’s in terms of wine, it’s it’s bonkers. ButΒ that’s what we’re going to do in Vancouver.Β Β We’re gonna we’re gonna demystify Italy. Yeah. We love Bonkers in Vancouver. So, Filippo,Β Β there’s some interesting underlying themes thatΒ you’re thinking about. I know that you’re doing,Β Β
Uh, a few talks and seminars. Tell us aboutΒ these themes that you’re thinking about.Β Well, in a nutshell, the the most important, uh,Β theme would be the contrast between the lighterΒ Β style wines that are produced in Italy in theΒ past. There was a moment about all the winesΒ Β
Needed to be big and bold and, you know,Β uh, bodybuilders. But the idea that we’reΒ Β going to bring with the lightness is the factΒ that there is strength and, uh, uh, depth inΒ Β light wines from, uh, you know, think about,Β uh, each swallow, for instance, from AbruzzoΒ Β
Or from Alto Adige or even a light SangioveseΒ or a beautiful, uh, Corvina from Valpolicella.Β So that is the idea. And then when you go, ofΒ course, the contrast is how are the Titans,Β Β the Super Tuscans, the Amarone, the barrel and theΒ Brunello doing right now? Are they still like theΒ Β
Supercharged wines, or is there a more trace ofΒ elegance that is actually coming into these winesΒ Β as well? And so the reinterpretation of Italy willΒ be all along. Wines like uh, Sorbara, LambruscoΒ Β di Sorbara, which is a super light JapaneseΒ Katana, super refreshing, uh, sparkling wine.Β
A lot of people know the Lambrusco, theΒ the saturated, super dark Lambrusco. SoΒ Β we’re going to show our, uh, BritishΒ Columbia guests our different sidesΒ Β of Italy. So that’s why I’m actually veryΒ excited myself. I can’t wait to be there.Β
And it’s going to be fun to try some BC wines. Uh,Β you know, we have some Sangiovese here. We have weΒ Β have some similar styles. It’d be fun to contrastΒ them with everything that’s coming in from Italy.Β Yeah, absolutely. I’ve, uh, I had the opportunityΒ to visit last October. Uh, British Columbia,Β Β
The Okanagan Valley. I went on a canoe. Uh, youΒ know, like bareback horse riding and then triedΒ Β everything. You know, I’ve seen it all. It’sΒ so beautiful. And I tried a lot of the ItalianΒ Β wines. I love the wild and free attitude thatΒ there is in that region. And so I can’t waitΒ Β
To do a compare and contrast tasting, uh, uh,Β matching food and wine, uh, with a very brandΒ Β new country like British Columbia and a veryΒ old one like Italy is going to be exciting.Β Harry, how about a couple of tips for theΒ people that are getting into the room,Β Β
Some of the things that are set up. What aboutΒ this Italian booth? How is that going to work?Β That’s a great place to start becauseΒ that’s where our swamis and portersΒ Β are going to be pouring a selection ofΒ Italian wines. But more importantly,Β Β
They’re going to know what’s at the 71 table.Β So you can use that. Italy’s tasting station asΒ Β a launching pad to the different regions, theΒ different grapes they can steer you to tableΒ Β 36 or number 47 or 68 or number four. And thenΒ when you go to those 71 Italian tables, that’s,Β Β
That’s like over 250, about 250 to 300 wines. Every one of those wines that are poured, everyΒ Β wine that you can taste is available for sale.Β You can buy it at the onsite BC liquor store.Β And get it shipped to your closeΒ to your house so you don’t have toΒ Β
Carry it home. It’s a very simple process. Oh, I love that. Hands free at the end ofΒ Β the night, go to the restaurants, have the winesΒ shipped free of charge anywhere in the province,Β Β and if you are somewhere else in the province,Β stay Vancouver Hotels.com. Book your hotelΒ Β
And get a free ticket to those 71 wineries. Yeah, okay, but you got to have a ticket toΒ Β get in. Harry, how is that all going and whereΒ can people go right now to get make sure thatΒ Β they can get somehow get into this festival. Vanwinefest.ca Tasting room tickets are on saleΒ Β
Now. Special events are on sale in January. GetΒ organized. Talk about it with your friends andΒ Β family, and we’ll see you at the end of February. Okay. Well thanks, Harry. Thanks, Filippo. And,Β Β uh, to our, uh, thank you, viewers. Uh, we’ve gotΒ a lot of Italian content planned in February. Uh,Β Β
That will be running in Gismondi on Wine. And,Β of course, uh, like Filippo, we’re tastingΒ Β wines every day and posting notes up through theΒ festival. There’ll be a lot of Italian contentΒ Β available for you. What to taste, where to go, andΒ who to meet inside the room. Thanks for joiningΒ Β
Us, gentlemen, and we’ll see you inside the roomΒ at the 45th Vancouver International Wine Festival.Β Arrivederci. Arrivederci. Ciao
