Our wine today is the Frescobaldi nip pizanno 2007 Chianti Rufina reserva this popular italian red is acidic with flavors of cherry raspberries and plum this is priced at $22 what’s bring in the judges thank you Steve it’s red we know that it’s – yes honey it’s not Pinot Noir so certainly

Some some Bordeaux characteristics however I’d like to point out the color look how it’s turning sort of garnet it’s no longer purplish red it looks like an aged wine I would have to say six or seven years old or a great variety that turns brownish red early on

In its development I think there could be some Tuscan elements here definitely um when you said Bordeaux uh the grape varietal that jumped out at me the most was Merlot particularly because of the nose and the color what do you think of the color John was mentioning that it it’s more of

A garnet now I grated some agent it’s not a youthful wine but it can have macro shots as old as he thinks it might be I can throw in one other possibility here just to up the stakes a little bit I mean considering the paler color and considering the plumy fruit and the

Abundance of wood would you consider Spain as a possibility Tempranillo yes but a possibility the wood would probably be American oak usually and that’s much sort of coconutty other than here agreed agreed but there’s a lot of new ways Spanish wines that are made it with European wood yeah actually the one

Thing about Merlot in the old world if we we are going to agree that this is an old-world why there aren’t a lot of places that do a single varietal mellow it’s generally as a blend and that’s not found on point Sumatra that could be for

Long Dockers your yes I mean either then mother is it is bottle separately I know I don’t know Merlot well here I’ve come off the merlot I think there’s too much acidity here for the Merlot I think this is nebula I’m back in Italy color matches there

This garnet shade it’s a little darker than traditional style but this is not a traditional wine I think it’s been made in a slightly modern style with in my view a little bit too much wood that’s sweetened up with that vanilla but all that red fruit slightly tari your Merlot dust is

My nebula dust so firmness of it of Italian wine comes through here that’s where I’m heading okay so what if I told you some of you are close but none of you have the grape varieties Italy or Spain if I give you that do you think you’ll get the variety

We might do yes yes it’s an Italian wine sits and you’re busy yeah so I think Monica that’s the only thing that’s gonna have that is lovely of acidity here’s my guess ya Sangiovese with merlot aneri bicha this is Chianti gently classic oh and they haven’t declared that there’s 20% merlot and

Vintage we wouldn’t see anything earlier than 2007 on them on the market okay honey I think that matches I use a candy as well now now in terms of Italian because I always think that Rioja Tempranillo from Spain and Chianti Sangiovese from Italy are very similar

Wines they they work so well with food and they fulfill the same role in those people’s cultures from their food and so I thought it was temporary in Spain I can easily be talked into every time he’s Italian but it’s underrated if it’s Chianti that Merlot element to it at the

Beginning if there is a bit that’s blended in here and often is in the in this region so I think that I think that’s a good guest guys now you did much better that so what is it yeah and it is a 2007 yeah there is Mallory good

Value what’s going on yeah I mean stylistically I think we were actually quite close yeah when did oh these are all in the same sort of hemisphere of wine styles mm-hmm so you were all wrong but I do have to say that you John with his guests of the

Century of AZ and you had the year so I’m gonna declare you the winner of this round oh thank you favoritism thing you think so Steve I you did get the red I mean I am giving you that point yes here but that’s a wrap join us again next time as we

Battle another bottle you

  1. Without the moistness of cr1tikal, this is akin to Chinese water torture, not a moistness people want

  2. "How dare you call yourselves sommeliers, master sommeliers and wine educators, how you passed your sommelier tests is beyond me."

  3. They all got it wrong… What's the point if the presenter just gives it away. She said it was Italian and NOT Nebbiolo, considering the color and fruit+oak profile instantly pushes it to Chianti so she basically gave them a young Chianti Reserva, youngest vintage out being 2007. The only impressive part is landing on Merlot as the remainder of the blend…

  4. not blind taste tests…is it about the taste, or how it looks? a little food coloring can make it any color you'd like
