Amaron might be the quintessential cold weather red wine amaron deel Pella is from the vetto in Northern Italy it’s named after the city of Venice it’s one of Italy’s most expensive famous and coveted red wines a lot of European wines are rich with history but amaron is a relatively new invention in terms
Of wine amaron wasn’t really in commercial production until the 50s I know in some previous videos I said the 60s I had to refact check sorry I made some of mistakes that’s the thing about wine there’s so much to know that you make mistakes from time to time amaron
Is not the name of a grape variety it’s made up of several grape varieties from vetto including Corvina corvinone molara oseleta and rondinella besides Corvina a lot of these grapes don’t produce wines that have big body so locals producers wanted to make bigger red wines thus
Amaron is born amaron is a dry wine that’s based off a sweet wine technique that was probably invented by the Greeks amaron is made by drying grapes the grapes are picked and then they’re put into boxes in the past they were put into Lofts to dry but these days they’re
Put humidity controlled conditions so rot doesn’t develop in essence Those Grapes become raisins they start to shrivel those dried grapes can’t be vinified until after the 1st of December except in Crazy vintages that drying process helps metabolize some of the acids and it also helps polymerize some
Of the tannins that’s just a fancy way of saying it gives amaron that signature velvety creamy mouth feel and since the grapes are concentrated there’s more sugar alcohol and dry amarones tend to be pretty high good up to 16 17° even though they’re dry ones there’s a touch
Of a residual sugar left over more than standard dry red wines amaron then needs to be aged for at least 2 years and then amaron Reserva needs to be aged at least four years before it’s released onto the market that’s by rule in practice since these are big red wines are usually age
For a lot longer sometimes up to 5 years I have five wines here today that come from the vintages of 2015 16 17 and 18 and all of these are current releases you’ll see two different types of amarona DEA pelella you’ll see which is standard says amarona deel pachella then
You’ll also see amaron deel Pella Classico if you imagine on a map the region which amaron deel Pella is made is like this and then amarona de Lael Pella Classico is a little bit smaller those are some of the most cover amarones although both kinds can be
Excellent because of the cost of drying The Grapes the amount of Labor and also you’re getting a lot less yield when you shrink down the grapes amarones tend to be pretty expensive some of Italy’s most sought-after most expensive red wines are amaron deel Pella namely those like
Del Forno or quintarelli that can go up to $500 a bottle amaron is the dry version of Roto deal poell which is also made by drying grapes however the fermentations don’t finish all the way through therefore there’s still residual sugar left in the grap M and the wines
Become sweet wines one of Italy’s most underrated Wines in my opinion vichella is a beautiful area in Northern Italy it’s extremely hilly vetto produces more wine than any region in Italy and the criticism of amaron producers is sometimes those wineries can become factories bigger production where us wine Geeks want smaller artial wineries
When I started out drinking wine I really loved amaron cuz of the big bold rich flavors as I started to drink more white wines more medium body Reds with finesse I got away from amaron but a lot of people love it and a lot of you drink
It as well I have five wines here ranging from 70 to 100 bucks even a couple reservas mixed in let’s see what they taste like luxurious red wines tasting out of luxurious red glass I have my Gabriel glass Gold Edition these are hand blown these are lighter than zos I don’t have
A link because they’re always sold out but I just thought i’ let you know as always I corv in these and I had somebody mix them up for me wine number one here it’s a little bit lighter for amaron doesn’t really have super deep color I talk about how I don’t enjoy
Amaron as much but whenever I drink a bottle or go back to tasting I’m like oh man maybe I should drink these a little bit more it smells wonderful it’s got this red cherry just a touch of Raisin not too much definitely mocha type flavors just a hint of tobacco I really
Like that mocha feeling and I’m not talking about milk chol I’m thinking more Dark Chocolate Oak doesn’t show up here it smells really nice maybe even a little floral just got that wonderful amaron mouth feel the name comes from Amaro which means bitter in Italian you have that nice italianness bitter like
Tannin the alcohol comes up a little bit although since amarones have a touch of residual sugar that kind of brings down the perception of alcohol so it’s not too much finish here is extremely long this is a really good wine really good wine let’s move on to number two two has
Much more menthol flavors the mint really stands out there are still some cherry flavors I get like kind of a a touch of red apple skin not as much mocha you have the mintiness the fuess a little tobacco the thing about amaron even though they’re higher in alcohol the
Mouth is really round which a lot of people like and then there’s just a touch of grip in the Tans I’ve noticed as I’ve started going back and tasting more amarones again they’re not really humongous massive lines like you’d expect yes they’re bigger and body bigger and alcohol but this is quite
Good quite good the finish on these is what’s killer three looks a little bit darker a little bit more dried fruit flavor some more dried cherry dried cranberry even a touch of Raisin a lot of chocolate just just smells a little bit bigger this is like the type of red
Wine you give to somebody they smell like oh that smells like a big wine this is a big massive impressive wine I feel like most people are going to like the style a little more darker fruit bigger some big time tannins I prefer actually I really likeed number
One one of the red fruit type flavors but it’s still good wine four has the most mocha just number one was more red fruit driven three was more dark fruit two was more menthol four kind of brings the mocha in just that touch of red fruit yet some dried dark
Fruit flavors as well which I like this is done really well it’s really attractive it’s bright for a big red wine this is serious stuff those of you that watch the channel know my palette tends to go more towards medium body red wines more red fruit type of flavors but I’m that’s really
That’s a super impressive wine let’s move on to number five here five also smells balanced nice mocha red cherry flavors this has got the most tobacco still going to get that black cherry black raspberry it’s not dried fruit flavors it’s still pretty much fresh fruit and impressive length balanced I
Have to say five and three definitely felt like the biggest the richest the most full in body so if you like that style that’s probably what you’re going to go for I’m ready for the reveal these have some slight differences and flavor differences and richness but I think that there’s an
Amaroni here for everybody even me somebody that doesn’t is not the hugest fan of Ameron let’s start with number three I think three is the one that most people are going to think is the best I scored at the lowest out of these five I still gave a high score but the lowest
Not my style of wine bigger richer more dark fruit flavors this is what a lot of people think of when they think of amarone more dried fruit flavors I gave it 93 points I still thought it was an outstanding wine I just preferred some of these other ones more let’s take a
Look s we this is the teski Capal Monte Omi Amon deel poell classical Reserva so it’s got all those things in the name I was talking about 2015 90 bucks I had the 13 the last one I had which was super impressive wine really good stuff
This is the type of wine it’s going to get much higher scores than I gave it comes in at 17% alcohol it’s just bigger than what I preferred still I thought it was an excellent wine next up number one 93 plus points a little bit lighter in
Color more red fruit driven it’s a wine that I really love I mean I absolutely love this wine I think a lot of people might it’s a little bit too light for amaron although I know a lot of producers are trying to make amaron a little bit more drinkable let’s see
Lighter in color even a little bit more floral 93 plus points this is the amaron that I think I would really prefer to drink right now out of all these five um let’s take a look here I think some people might think it’s a little bit too
Light this is the Remo Farina the mon fante amaron deel poell classical Reserva 2016 5 bucks family-owned producer this is really nice stuff I know it’s not cheap whatsoever but I think it’s absolutely delicious wine 2016 fantastic vintage in amaron actually in all of Italy and a lot of Europe I never skimp
On buying 2016 wines from Europe be it red or white I think this is delicious and I might have some of that tonight I might drink that that’s really nice okay we have two here tied at 94 points number two and number five let’s go with
Number two I thought it was the one with the most Menthol had some mintiness had a bit of red apple skin I actually thought it was the teski because I knew what all these wines were before I baged them and somebody mixed them up randomly because I don’t have another assistant
To help procure these wines regardless usually Menthol that’s a signature of some of tesy wines 94 points let’s take a look very smaller producer this is the r Kalisto amaron de Lael Pella 2016 amaron is not the focus I know of this producer there’s only 1,500 bottles
Made in this vintage this comes in at 85 bucks I think the rule in valella is 65 or 70% of your production at can actually go towards amaron they do not focus on this this might be a harder wine to find because it’s a smaller producer 2016 again cool vintage orange
Capsule I like it a lot that menthal this really reminded me of stuff you’ll find from Kuna wara sometimes you get from Lair Cabernet Fran I really liked it okay also tide number five lots of tobacco type flavors it’s the one that had the most tobacco brilliant balance
94 points man these are some big time wines 94 points this is a wine that I always love this is the zenato amarona de Lael poetto Classico 2018 so the youngest in the bunch comes in at 70 bucks this is one amaron zenato that I will consistently drink when I see it on
The Shelf I think it’s a wonderful wine 2018 I don’t know too much about that vintage in valella all I know is this showed really nice kudos to zenata the top wine mocha mocha mocha bright balanced I thought this was outstanding I gave it 96 points massive score and I know what’s left
This is the t s Antonio Campo de amaron de Lael Pella 2017 I know this is a single Vineyard one this comes in at 79 bucks 2017 I know it was more of a warmer vintage in Italy 16% alcohol sorry I go I didn’t tell you all the alcohols everything here is
16 except the multi only 177° a long time ago when I did didn’t know anything about amaron this is one of the first producers that I drank from when I was in Singapore doing a wine dinner I was impressed with them then and look at their wines showing super nice they sent
Me a pack of wines and everything I tasted from them was absolutely delicious think is also a cool thing the top wine here even though amaron de Pella Classico Classico is the wines that are more coveted this was not a Classico but it’s still was awesome so
Tell me do you like amaron deel Pella do you have any favorite producers I’d love to hear drop it in the comments below

Two things:
1. The price increase for shipping to the US seems very high on Amarone. Zenato goes for 35€ in Europe.
2. Those that have been to Valpolicella know, that there is quite some difference in elevation in the valley. While most of the vineyards are in the plains, which is about the same level as Lake Garda (50m a.s.l.), vineyards go up to 600m a.s.l. Obviously the elevation means cooler climate and therefore fresher, more balanced wines.
Now you're talking!! Happy New Year!! 🎉
Tommasi and Masi are tremendous.
Prices in US seem to be out of line compared to Europe. The Zenato Amarone goes here for 37,50 euro. The Palazzo Maffei is about the same price. And for those who cannot afford Amarone many Valpolicella ripasso's offer a lot of pleasure. Some can been valued as baby Amarone. )
Drinking it outside, while it is snowing.Needs air.Cheers from Cortina s'Ampezzo!Happy NY!
First of all Happy New Year ! Secondly, black raspberry – I know of no such fruit. Blackberry, bramble, mulberry, for example? Raspberries are red.
Happy ny! All the best and thanks for the content !
Jojojo what a blind taste 😀 i like Amarone such a pity i don't have access to more types of italian wines here. I love that mokka and tabacco flavours i like that dark types of flavours (this come whit time for me i liked red fruits more drinkable types of wines when i was young but now love heavy and dark flavours come to the dark side :D)
I tasted a few Amorones at the JS Wines of Italy tasting event here in Seoul. I was particularly impressed with the Amarone classico from producer called Zeni. I don’t know much about Amarones as it’s pretty hard to get a wide range of them here in Korea at good value, but I remember that wine had the cleanest and most fresh fruit taste that matched my palate!
Happy NY. Amarone from Bussola was very enjoyable and i really tasty was also La Casetta Valpolicella Ripasso from Domini Veneti.
Love Amarone. I've been to Tedeschi and Tommasi this year. They're very close to each other. 5 minutes walk. Tedeshi is more like a family winery. Awesome tastings on both
Wine can be confusing, and wine prices can also be confusing. You said that Tedeschi was 90USD, well here it's 121CAD. And that Zenato was 70USD, while it's only 65CAD where I'm at. Weird.
I haven't had Amarone in years, the cost here is a little to high for those wines almost double what was quoted! I prefer medium to light bodied wines, but no doubt they are very nice wines. For me they would be a special occasion wine shared with friends and family.
"I love Amarone more than anything else. I go to the Valpolicella region or Verona and Lake Garda 1-2 times a year. Your wines, or the highly-rated Amarone ones, are all from good producers. I prefer the small Amarone producers where there are hardly any bottles available. Monte dei Ragni (5 thousand bottles per year), Noemi Amarone (2 thousand bottles), L'Arco (5,000 bottles per year), Monte Faustino Riserva (about 6,000 bottles). I have been to the wineries several times except for Monte dei Ragni. It's a fantastic area with very nice, hard-working people."
I like Amarone and Recioto as well. Usually I open up a bottle when I make dinner for friends who'll answer "red" to the question what kind of wine do you like.
Totally agree with Zenato, I've been disappointed with some expensive Amarones but Zenato always delivers.
Marchesi Biscardo is probably my favorite.
"You measure the size of the accomplishment by the obstacles you had to overcome to reach your goals." *Booker T. Washington
Love your videos. It’s education and tasting all in one
In September, we were standing at the bar in Antica Bottega del Vino in Verona. We had the following glasses of Amarone’s in front of us: Tommasi, Zenato and Tedeschi. The lady who was behind the bar (she was great!) asked to try the 2018 Venturini. It was the winner hands down. What a night! 😊😊😊😊 I wish I could find it in Arizona. We spent the next 10 days in Montepulciano sampling VNDM’s and Chianti Classico Gran Selezione’s. ❤😊❤😊❤😊❤. Going back next fall.
It's great to see wineries in Veneto starting to make lighter bodied Amarone, as for a while they were kind of making dryish Ports; rather than red wine. I don't have a favorite producer, because as many people said they are expensive.
Unless you buy them at Costco, Aldi, Lidl, etc. 🤣 So far I have only tried 2012 & 2013, '13 seems to be slightly better vintage. But I agree 2016 was a great vintage across Europe, for both whites and reds. As Gollener said below, Zeni makes a reasonably priced Amarone. Their Vignealte Amarone Classico 2013 was pretty amazing, savory notes, dried fruit, tertiary notes; very well integrated.
Great video and fun tasting.
Wow, Look at that! 2008 Remo Farina Montefante Riserva was one of my favorite Amarones ever 😊
Very expressive fruit, both on the nose and on the palate.
That being said, I usually prefer a Ripasso over an Amarone.
I have never tried amarone, but this makes me very interested! I appreciated your descriptions and also the background info!
