NYC Walk Through Chinatown, Little Italy, Soho, and the West Village [4k]

The air was finally starting to clear from all the smoke of the Canadian wildfires which set upon NYC earlier in the week, so I figured I’d take a weekday walk, figuring it would be less crowded. I discovered that pretty much everywhere people were enjoying Summer Fridays.
I made my way to Chinatown, passing through Doyers Street. It’s hard to imagine, with its colorful path and patio umbrellas, that this was once known as “Murder Alley” or the “Bloody Angle”. Now it’s a popular spot to enjoy food. I continued on to Columbus Park where some folks were playing the erhu and other instruments, and others partook in games of mahjong (which I did a poor job of capturing, but you can sort of make out at the tables).
Past Canal Street you enter Little Italy, which has a small buffer of NYC souvenir shops before you realize the culture has completely changed. Even before the pandemic New Yorkers had a penchant for alfresco dining, and Little Italy may be one of the few places in the city where it’s actually semi-believable due to less traffic and more general vibe.
Once again the culture changes as we veer into Soho. Although it’s still extremely crowded, I shudder to think that it’s even more crowded on weekends. I found myself focusing more on navigating people traffic than enjoying its iconic architecture.
Crossing West Houston Street we make our escape and enter the West Village, passing by bars and iconic music venues, before we enter Washington Square Park.
