A few decades ago, most people didn’t know anything about gluten. Today there is an unmistakable trend of people going gluten-free in the hopes of solving all of their gut woes. Why is this?
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman explores this question with the world’s top gluten expert, Dr. Alessio Fasano. Dr. Fasano founded the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1996. In 2013, he moved the Center to Massachusetts General Hospital and renamed it the Center for Celiac Research and Treatment. He is chief of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at MassGeneral Hospital for Children and professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

He says right away that wheat isn't GMO. Maybe it's just splitting hairs in terminology, because there's research showing it has been modified MASSIVELY, partly to allow more to be grown in smaller spaces, but ALSO, it was purposely made addictive at some point decades ago. cf William Davis MD's book "Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight" for specifics
Me when I spread nutrition disinformation
Very interesting analysis of many factors involved in body's reactions to daily staples of food. I often discuss that I never heard about lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance when I was a kid in the late 70s or 80s. I thought that maybe it was de to our ignorance at that time, but in fact, what the doctor says makes sense. All these changes in the environment, plus our ever increasing artificial lifestyle. I have cut most of dairy and processed food in my daily intake. I still eat grains, but not much pasta. Feel like I got more energized since then. Thanks for sharing this information!
The interviewer should speak less and let the guest do the telling. I'm not being mean it's just what makes these types of interviews so much more enjoyable for me. If the interviewer wants to push their view on some issue they should make a separate video for that issue.
Commercial bread generally has additional gluten added to the dough in the United States.
That's what I'm wondering…. 50yrs ago everything was fine
hmmm, so gluten avoidance is not just an attention-getting device!
Your guest is mostly guessing and making things up. Until we know the cause such behaviour will more likely hide the mechanism rather than help identify it. Some of what he says may be correct, but some not so. Speculation based on ones huge impressive intellect and ego more often leads to incorrect conclusions.
Pesticide has weakened our immune system.
Conspiracy of silence regarding preservative chemicals.
Problem is the GMO wheat of today. Wheat is not the natural wheat of the past.
I call bullshit. We didn't see the issue, because the issue was unknown centuries ago. That doesn't mean it wasn't there.
The less gluten, the more other crap is added fill the space. The same old story.
Because autoimmunity is a vaccine, pesticide, and GMO issue
Thanks for the video. The guest appears to be speaking perfect English to my ears. Not sure why he needs subtitles.
I eat wheat all of the time. I am totally healthy and always have been. I'm 64 and intend to continue eating wheat, drinking milk, eating whatever, except sugar, I guess. I'm sorry for all of you unhealthy people. It sucks to be you.
I traveled to Spain and ate wheat without issue over there. Here I cannot have it or it makes me sick. I don’t have celiac but I am sensitive 100%
Because America hadn't poisoned their food like now.

100% horseshit.
THEY ARE TRYING TO KILL US
This also occurs in europe
What part of sprayed with cancer causing roundup dont you understand? Meaning the wheat plant itself is sprayed with a proven cancer causing chemical to say drying time. Its insane what the government allows from their wealthy corporate donors
Bread conditioners contain L cysteine and they are made of human hair that's why we can't digest it. Please educate yourselves on this and spread the word so they stop putting it into food. Gluten isn't bad it's the L cysteine
It’s because the evil Cabal is poisoning our food especially our wheat with their outrageous methods!
I’ve had brain fog my entire life and it’s getting worse as I get older. A PSYCHIC immediately interrupted me when I was telling her I have anxiety and adhd. She said I’m allergic to something. Something I don’t even realize. So today is day 1 gluten free. I’m very interested to see how this effects my mental health. I’m so tired of feeling like I’m not enough 🤞 time to heal
Our food industry cares more about profit than the health of their customers, their should be no chemicals or pesticides in our foods period, let the bugs eat their share, we talk about global warming but not the poison we spray in the air, on our food, and in our drinking water. They care more about the product and the the health benefits to their customers.
Because the wheat isn’t the same grain as it was in the past!!!!and there is all kinds of poison sprayed on it to keep the bugs off.
How can gluten be destroying our health when everything you see in the store is "gluten-free"?
Quit saying how great the Italian Einkorn flour is. After hearing this, our government will be hunting that flour and trying to destroy it also. They are trying to kill us.
its NOT the gluten, its the glyphosate poison from ROUNDUP herbacide sprayed on all non organic wheat and other grains and vegies that poison the micro biome of our gut causing celiac, crones, IBS, dementia, autism and overall systemic failure. Dr Stephanie Seneff is the expert on this poison and her work must be researched by all who are interested in restoring health and well being.
I feel God awful! I love pasta and bread but now I’m so sick! My hair is thinning and I look like I’m 8 months pregnant! When I took the wheat out of my diet, I started to feel great! But life happens and the next thing you know, I’m eating pizza! So frustrating!
Preservatives are added, Preservatives cause problems.
When food is freshly made and not through a process factory people can eat the food.
How disappointed I am by this episode held by these two doctors! I cannot even express! Perhaps, it works well for American auditory, but as an European, I can tell plenty of people are having gluten issues and celiac diseases on this side of the world. One anecdotal evidence, or hundred, is not a proof of a theory. One must compare how the same people live in States, what else they use, eat, drink while consuming gluten (gallons of soda, or milk, or glass of red wine), when at home and when in States, bacterial exposure, etc. If anything, this theory proves that gluten in States is worse than in Europe, however, it it still damaging people's guts also here. If that was the message of the vide, perhaps, it should have been clarified, as the Internet is available to people outside USA as well. Somehting has changed in wheat we consume all over the world, this video has no information on that.
Dear Ms Purohit… I am going to make a comment which doesn't seem nice, but it is mainly to draw attention to something you perhaps don't even realize; While the video and information is excellent, every time you were speaking, i grated, because you have a typical way of speaking which has become endemic to American women: vocal fry. ( A study recently published in the Journal of Voice, a peer-reviewed medical publication, found women with vocal fry were PERCEIVED as less attractive and intelligent than those without.) Many people say it began with the Kardashians, and spread like wildfire as women began to think it was "sophisticated". In the last ten years, more and more female newscasters have it, as do many of the younger actresses in film. It is, unfortunately, irritating to the point where I generally change channels as soon as I hear it; I'm sure I'm not the only one this bothers… and the good thing about it is that it is a LEARNED habit which can be undone. I suggest you become aware of it and get some professional speech therapists to help you with this. – and any other woman nowadays who has fallen into the trap of thinking that it makes them sound more sophisticated. It is primarily a female thing – perhaps because most men see no reason to imitate the Kardashians. I'm sorry to be disagreeable, but if people don't speak out against it – it will become the norm. Horrors!
Another big change from 50 years ago in America: we're nearly all OBESE. Even the kids! When I look at all pictures, I'm struck by the fact that hardly anyone is overweight, even the adults. And as always, most people were poor, and consuming mostly starchy food which is cheaper.
For those noticing pesticides causing issues, when I drink organic milk I am suddenly no longer "lactose intolerant."
so I'm not sure if it's the gluten that's in the USA bread or you guys seem to imply that bread is not allowed to rise overnight as they do in Europe?
I spent several years thinking I was gluten intolerant. Even had the doc run a celiac test. Found out from an intolerance test that I'm just simply allergic to wheat.
I wish I was born in Sardinia, but I was born in Eastern Europe 79 years ago. We knew about food sensitivities, already my great grandmother was particularly sensitive to several food items and warned us to stay away from them. As for me, I had hives as a child quite often but they were considered "part of childhood". We lived in several smaller places, my parents were doctors who were moved around by the government, and in those places people grew their foodstuff as their ancestors always did. Exactly 60 years ago I entered my musical studies hoping to become a concert pianist, but all of a sudden I started to sprout bubbles on my fingers (dermatitis herpetiformis), which burst and bled during my long practice sessions. Dermatologists tried all kinds of creams and salve, sticky, stinky stuff, but nothing helped. I had to choose another direction in life. So did a cousin of mine who had to give up violin because of some nasty rashes on his neck. I do have the bubbles come and go to this day, but I realized the trigger point much later, here in Canada, when discussion of health topics became more widespread. My trigger was a bakery next to the conservatory where almost daily I indulged in crispy hot, freshly baked buns with a glass of butter milk. My case just proves the fact that a lot of people had problems throughout history, I guess some more than others, just that doctors lacked the knowledge to be able to diagnose the problems. As for those people who find that they do not have problems when they visit other countries, it just means that they became sensitized to certain varieties to grains and a temporary exposure to other varieties gives them a respite. But if they stayed in Sardinia, for example, permanently, their wheat sensitivity would kick in after a while again.
This doctor doesn’t want to say what is the obvious answer to every question posed.
That being, yes.
People lived briefer lives and ate much less.
endless blather and hysteria. the sky is falling! the sky is falling!
