Giotto’s Bakery has won some of Italy’s top culinary prizes for its artisanal panettone, created through a process that honors centuries of tradition. But those making this sweet bread, a favorite during the holidays, are doing so behind the walls of the Due Palazzi prison, on the outskirts of Padua. Correspondent Seth Doane reports.

  1. never migrate to italy it offers nothing but underground illegal work for immigrants that cannot find any work then ends up in jail..with such short time since italy opened its immigration most prisoners has high percent of jail immigrant and only 5 percent of immigrant graduates ..the only good thing is the pasta and dry pizza.

  2. We need to do better by our prisoners to find a future endeavour, so many of them didn't have a fair shot to start with.
we have a huge elderly population of prisoners we need to find a new solution for

  3. It's great to make french toast or bread pudding. I prepared it for breakfast on Christmas Eve day. Drizzle warm syrup over it yummy.
    Bon Natale

  4. We need more programs like this in prisons in the US and in communities where kids can’t imagine their futures, so they don’t commit crimes in the first place.

  5. In Europe, prison is all about reform and rehabilitation. In America, prison is all about punishment and cruelty

  6. There is a lot of talent locked up. Give them something to do with all the time they are given.

  7. This is such a great story! Giving people skills and pride in their work and ultimately themselves. It would be so great if these opportunities were given to young people before they ever did something that landed them in prison.

  8. I was trying to buy one but they stopped selling it in safeway and now im jealous haha

  9. I cannot have Christmas with out m Paneton—- from Peru ! yes it comes from Italy but it migrated to our country and we love it

  10. I tried panettone, was surprised I didn't care for it . I'd eat it but, wouldn't buy it.

  11. All prisons in the world should do this. In California some prisoners become fire fighters. Amazing

  12. Great story. What better way to rehabilitate the convicted than by teaching them a useful skill which feeds a community and turns a profit. Love to see it.

p.s. panettone is now a bucket list item. That thing looks too delicious.

  13. This is something I dream to see in the United States. A country that focuses on educating their citizens instead of punishing them is a great country. Good for 🇮🇹 Italy!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

  14. Awesome story, I’ve never had this bread but I’ll definitely try it now. Thanks for sharing ❤

  15. I like the program & intent over the panettone, tried one I got from fry's electronics years ago, not impressed.

  16. This is fancy prison labor. What rights do the inmates have? What are they paid, especially compared to market wages? How do other bakeries (firms) compete?

  17. Changes my thinking. I thought they made license plates in prison. I had to edit. I should have known this wasn’t in the US.
