Didn't know much about him when friends more or less dragged me to see him play to a couple of thousand people at the Sydney Opera House in I think about 76-77. When one of my friends who didn't go later asked me what it was like I said "I have just seen a genius". At that time he also did impressions and a bit of comedy as part of the show and leapt around and over the piano like a circus performer. Next time I saw him was at Wembley Arena in London in 87 by which time he was a fully fledged star and while there were more musicians and a larger catalogue to choose from, and it was an amazing night, I still think the 76-77 show was one of the best I have ever seen from anyone.
Great reaction! You should listen to the live version.❤️🤘🏻
FINALLY!! A proper Billy song. This album is a perfect album, legitimately. 🖤
This album?…one word AWSOME!
THIS is what made Billy Joel not just a star but a timeless icon. Like Bohemian Rhapsody it’s both different & perfect. The whole album is perfection but this song is the crown jewel. I’m one of those who’ve been asking from the beginning. Finally! Next see him transition into a rocker in the monster hit Glass Houses album. A few gems It’s Still Rock & Roll to Me, You May Be Right & Don’t Ask Me Why.
I did not read all 1000 comments but did you realize sometimes he was speaking of wine and sometimes he was speaking about pills. Bottle of red, bottle of white obviously about wine. Then later he clearly said bottle of reds, bottle of whites. There were pills called reds and whites. You have to listen closely. I noticed that dichotomy as soon as the song originally came out.
I was just listening to this song the other day. Finally got it unstuck from my head. And here I am.😂
This beautiful song is about the long lost love!!
I was playing this on vinyl before you were born
I was very happy to hear Amber use the word “masterpiece”. It certainly is. But unlike most music artists of which only a relatively small number can claim to even have one masterpiece, Billy Joel has at least two! Another one of those you should definitely check out is “Zanzibar” off of the “52 Street” album. In addition to being an extremely well written multi-sectional song like this last one, it features 2 amazing trumpet solos from jazz great Freddie Hubbard. You will not be disappointed!
You need to do "Only the Good Die Young" next. It's about a guy who is trying to get a Catholic girl to give up her virginity to him. The Catholic church was pissed when it came out and we were told it was a sin to listen to it…so we definitely had to hear it!
Always a fun one 😎
Love this, almost perfection but you really should do Goodnight Saigon next, his most iconic song. If you do the live version from the last concert at Shea Stadium New York it will send chills down your spines as proud Americans. I am a brit and it did it to me first time I saw it.
The late, great Phil Ramone deserves a shoutout for producing "The Stranger" and "52nd Street." Won the Grammy for "52nd Street." He helped turn Billy Joel from a niche act into a worldwide star.
Have you done “She’s Always a Woman”? OMG. It’s amazing xx
He said in an interview this was his favorite song he wrote
produced by phil Ramone RIP .Definitely a masterpiece
Kudos to Richie Canata on saxophone and Clarinet!
I've always thought that all the different sections of this were still the same two people. At the beginning they are two old friends with an obvious history, because of the hint that it's, "our Italian restaurant."
Then there's the catching up part with, "got a new life, got a new wife, and the family is fine."
Next we launch into the story of Brenda & Eddie and the saga of their early life, and near the end, we realize that it may be Brenda & Eddie at the Italian restaurant sharing a "bottle of red, bottle of white" because, "they parted the closest of friends."
I give Elton a slight edge for his melodies, but you can't beat Billy's lyrics.
Sorry I'm late to the party, but I've been requesting this for so long, I had to Thank You.
Always a joy to watch Jay get into the keyboards while Amber melts into a sax solo or two or three.
Feel free to have the kids in the room for Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel). He wrote it for his daughter Alexa Ray.
I hope it has as many views as "The Logical Song" reaction. I know I added a couple hundred to the count.
If you EVER get a chance to see him in concert, GO! He is amazing. I've seen him twice and would see him 100x more if I could.
MASTERPIECE! please guys react to "JUST THE WAY YOU ARE"—— Regards!
Captain Jack is also an example of great storytelling
What about his song I",ve loved these". days
I saw the concert where when goodnight Saigon was played the lights came back up the Marin'e,s band played great.
If some enterprising person makes a musical of his life they must use this in it
"Only The Good Die Young"
I would also suggest New York State of Mind. It's a masterpiece.
This is Billy Joel at his most epic in my opinion, a lot of Beatles influence but ultimately I think a nod to Gershwin.
Growing up in Seattle, I don't think I ever heard this until I moved to New York. It stopped me in my tracks and might be my favorite Billy Joel song.
That song is an instant smile-maker!
My fave Billy Joel song!!!!
MASTERPIECE 💯‼️ Been loving the Brilliant song for over 30 years. Jersey Girl here !
You guys have to see him live!!! It is a great show!! I've seen him 5x in concert! Pressure is one of my favorites, Allentown, The Entertainer all great!!

I love this entire album – especially this song! Played it over and over again. And then seeing him live, just wow!
This brings back many memories…still know every word. This was my backyard growing up.
Billy Joel is my #1. Every song is golden. He is the GOAT.
For some serious piano SHREDDING, check out Billy Joel's "Angry Young Man". The Live from Long Island video is best.
The Stranger was one of my favorite albums from Billy Joel. I was born in the late 80s long after he was all but done with putting out music but, learning to love his music was a bonding experience for me and my Mother. I still put his music on when I want to entertain friends or just unwind after a long day.
Billy Joel's Magnum Opus.
This is probably my favorite Billy Joel song. I remember buying this LP fresh off the press.
"a couple of paintings from Sears" was a funny line
Its a musical movie
You missed the story of the song, but that's okay after you hear it a thousand times like I have you'll hear it and feel it. I love you both you feel like family.
Brenda and Eddie, Jack and Diane, Tommy and Gina, to name a few of the many couples in rock of that time
