The historic Bronzeville district is renowned as an early-20th-century African-American business and cultural hub, with famed residents like poet Gwendolyn Brooks honored with plaques on the Bronzeville Walk of Fame. The South Side Community Art Center hosts exhibitions by local artists, and colorful murals dot neighborhood streets. A lively dining scene includes BBQ joints and soul food restaurants.
Mostly residential and collegiate, the Near West Side is home to Maxwell Street, the birthplace of Chicago Blues and the Polish sausage sandwich. Nearby is a long-running Sunday market and Hull House museum, a former immigrant settlement founded by reformer Jane Addams. Michael Jordan made his name at the United Center, where the Bulls and Blackhawks play. Italian restaurants cluster on Taylor Street in Little Italy.
North Lawndale is one of the 77 community areas of the city of Chicago, Illinois, located on the its West Side. The area contains the K-Town Historic District, the Foundation for Homan Square, the Homan Square interrogation facility, and the greatest concentration of greystones in the city. In 1968, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stayed in an apartment in North Lawndale to highlight the dire conditions in the area and used the experience to pave the way to the Fair Housing Act.
The Near North Side is home to iconic skyscrapers like the 1920s Wrigley Building, as well as 360 Chicago, a 94th-floor observation deck. Both are on the “Magnificent Mile” section of North Michigan Avenue, along with posh boutiques and department stores. The Navy Pier lakefront attraction has rides, casual dining, and cruises, and the huge Museum of Contemporary Art stages innovative exhibitions.
