When I say “probably not” about whether people may have thought Markland was close to China, that’s because I interpret the passage as primarily about the fame of Greenlandic gyrfalcons (i.e. they’re so good that they’re exported all the way to China) rather than a strict geographical relationship. Greenland, Markland, and the Gobi Desert are all “arctic”, so get mentioned in the same passage, but that’s all they have in common.
