Growing wine in the mountainous and very steep landscape of Liguria is not for everyone. You have to be tough, and it helps to be a little crazy. This is how Antonio Basso describes life as a winemaker based in the village of Ortovero. In fact, there are only a few dozen full-time wine farmers in the entire region.
The Basso family specializes in exploring the many facets that their various plots can express. They make single field wines, and as a special thing, they ripen their sparkling wines in the nearby Grotto di Toirano cave, which has a perfect humidity and temperature for long-term storage of wine. In the basement, they work with naturally occurring yeasts at low temperatures. All the wines ferment and mature in large tanks. The style of the wines is freshness and finesse and with the pure fruit at the forefront.
The madness, the fiery heat and the hard work that the Basso family brings to the fore with the Durin winery in Liguria pays off, because the international medals are raining down on their wines. Every year, medals and prizes are awarded to their wines from Decanter, International Wine Challenge, Gambero Rosso and more.
