I found as many “authentic Sicilian” foods as I could stuff in my mouth in one day in Palermo, and here they are! The DIY Food Tour in Sicily included: Arancini (my favorite), Cannoli, Sicilian Orange, Pane Di Panelle, and Cassata Siciliana.
The arancini is a fried rice ball filled with sauce, meat, cheese, or other fllings. They’re named arancinis because once fried to a perfect golden, they look like Sicily’s famous oranges.
The cannoli is a classic most people know, a stiff pastry filled with a sweetened ricotta mixture. However, most don’t realize the deep cultural history that it is made of.
The Sicilian oranges had to be included because Sicily is said to have the best oranges in the world! It certainly did not disappoint.
Pane di Panelle is a sandwich made with chickpea-flour patties in the middle. Served as street food for about 2 euros.
Cassata Siciliana is an indulgent dessert. It consist of spongecake which is covered in a sweet almond cream, which is covered a thick sugar shell. It was so sweet I couldn’t finish it all!
If you’re wondering what to eat in Palermo, or what to eat in Sicily for that matter, then you’ll be faced with a bombardment of choices! Almost everything I ate in Sicily was fantastic, and so much of it holds deep roots in culture!
If you’re traveling on a budget, or you’re like me and you’re on one long-term low budget travel trip, then don’t pay an absurd amount of money for a food tour in Palermo or Sicily. Instead, do a DIY food tour and pay only for the food!
