The culture of this historic city is vibrant and intriguing. The city has been referenced in numerous films, songs, novels, poems, all of which have helped Venice spread its allure worldwide. Eminent playwrights and authors that have mentioned Venice in their works include Shakespeare, Anne Rice, Voltaire and many more. The city is famous for its Venetian Gothic architectural style, dating back to the 14th century. Doge’s Palace and the Ca’ d’Oro are some of the famous building sporting this style. Since the Middle Ages, the city has been a major centre of art. It is also the birthplace of the unique form of art known as Venetian School. nThe first canvases were developed in Venice, changing the face of the art of painting. Venice is also popular for Venetian glass, a type of ornate glass-work developed in the 13th century. Being a cultural hub of Italy throughout history, Venice played a significant role in the development of music. During the medieval times, it was popularly known as the ‘Republic of Music’. The city is home to La Fenice (built in 1786), one of the most famous opera houses in the world. Venetians love their cultural festivals and food. Every year, the Carnival of Venice is held in here, when people wear the famed Venetian masks. Other festivals include the Venice Film Festival, the Venice Biennale, the Festa del Redentore. Etc. Venice is famous for its seafood, sweets and wine too.

The current population of Venice living in mainland and surrounding islands was recorded at 270,884. As per 2009 census, 91.14% of the population comprises Italians. The other largest group comprises mainly of European who migrated to this place. People are predominantly are Roman Catholics but the people from other religions are also found here. There is also a very important and historic community of Jews reside here in an area called Venetian Ghetto. Venetian people are fond of art, architecture, music and festivals.
