Chinese authorities are investigating two cases involving the consumption of pangolins, a second-class protected species in China. Weibo user Zhanfangdeduoduo boasted online of her penchant for “delicacies” including pangolin, snake, swan and owl. Another post showed officials from China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region inviting investors from Hong Kong to eat pangolin in 2015.
These posts have sparked a public outcry online, fanning public concern over the trafficking and trade of pangolins in China. Authorities are still investigating whether pangolin was consumed at the banquet. The animal is often smuggled into the country because its meat is considered a delicacy and its scales are believed to have medicinal qualities.
