This video demonstrates ONE version of the dozens of different legitimate versions of “Sunday Gravy” that are being made today. If you research this item you’ll find a variety of different meats being used in this slow cooked sauce. The common denominator among all of the “Sunday Gravy” formulas is that they’re all “meat flavor infused tomato sauces”. Onions are a standard vegetable used in this preparation, but different cooks sometimes add a variety of different vegetables, red wines and ground meats to this sauce that include pork & beef, bell peppers, carrots, celery and mushrooms. In my opinion, the formula used here produces one of the best tasting tomato sauces you’re ever likely to encounter. In this video I also show you my approach to converting this delicious “gravy” into a pizza sauce by finishing it with a little tomato paste. Traditionally, among American-Italians, there’s no difference between a tomato sauce and a gravy.
On the other hand, the American tradition of the big Italian family dinner on Sundays has helped to cultivate and solidify the term “Sunday Gravy”. Often, the meats are served either with the sauce or separately and/or the gravy is used as the pasta sauce for the Sunday family dinner. Regardless of which day of the week this sauce is made or served, it’s still usually referred to as “Sunday Gravy”.
