“A strong brand is a raincoat in the storms of recession” I can’t remember who said this but I think the author forgot to tell Aldi shoppers. In just 20 years Aldi has grown from 0 to 500 stores and is about to overtake Morrisons. So much for raincoats.

Consumers appear ready and willing to turn their backs on a strong brand if the price is low enough. Aldi has sprinkled their fairy dust over wine just as they have broccoli and tomato sauce. Frankly, I can’t help but wonder what a bottle of vino that costs £3.26 tastes like. Knocking off the VAT and duty that leaves just 48p for the packaging, logistics and profit. And that’s before we start talking about the liquid.

Armed with 20 quid and an empty box I set off to my local Aldi and came back with three bottles: Baron St. Jean @ £3.26 Nero d’Avola @ £4.99 Barossa Shiraz @ £6.99 Next Tuesday (the 7th) at 19:00 BST I’ll be tasting these on-line with my friend Darryl at Avino. If you fancy joining us please drop Darryl an email: darryl.mattocks@avino.ai and he’ll send you a link. #aldi # #winetasting #bargainhunters
