PUBS, restaurants and cafes will close from tonight – but will still be able to sell takeaway food and drinks amid the coronavirus crisis, it was announced today. Boris Johnson today strengthened the drastic measures to fight the virus as he vowed “we will get through this together”. ⚠️ Read our coronavirus live blog for the latest news & updates As part of the announcement made tonight, cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants were told to close by the end of the day. The PM said: “We need now to push down further on that curve of transmission between us. “So following agreement between all the four nations of the UK, we are collectively telling all cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants to close tonight, as soon as they reasonably can, and not to open tomorrow. “To be clear, they can continue to provide takeout services.” Nightclubs, theatres, cinemas, gyms and leisure centres were also told to close tonight. Boris also urged the public to stay inside, saying: “You may be tempted to go out tonight and I say to you please don’t, you may think that you are invincible – but there is no guarantee that you will get it. “But you can still be a carrier of the disease and pass it on.” He added: “We want you as far as possible to stay at home.” It comes as the UK coronavirus death toll today hit 177, with 72 deaths alone recorded in London. Pictures have shown boozed-up Brits spilling out of clubs and bars in recent days despite the government pleading with people to stay at home. Sadiq Khan today also urged Londoners to stop all non-essential use of public transport. The new figures came as Health Secretary Matt Hancock today warned around 1.4million Brits could be told to self-isolate on Monday due to the bug. Experts say that older people and those with underlying health conditions are more susceptible to the deadly bug, which has infected at least 3,269 in the UK. And the measures could stay in place for “most of a year”, top experts warned. The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), which is advising the government on its response to the pandemic, has today published a report on its evidence. And a London hospital declared a “critical incident” over ICU bed shortages in the coronavirus crisis. Northwick Park Hospital has become overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients as London is the worst hit in the UK. Today we saw distressing footage of coronavirus patients in Italy wearing “plastic bubbles” on their heads and gasping for air.
