CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A few trends in eating expected in the new year might help you improve your health!

Dining out in the new year may be a little different than in previous years, with more people at least “trying” to eat well, so here’s the top trends expected in 2020 from SmartBreif Food and Beverage.

Expanded plant-based options, more choices for kids and more alcohol-free drinks are among expected trends in 2020.

These started according to SmartBrief Food and Beverage in 2019 and kinda stuck.

The meat alternatives have been so popular that even fast-food restaurants have now started making them more available.

There may also be more restaurants serving everything from egg substitutes, to veggie tacos and yes, maybe even, someday… meatless Cincinnati chili?

Many of these trends are aimed at more of the “flexitarian” cutting down on meat, rather than a true vegan trying to avoid it altogether.

As for the alcohol-free drinks, a lot of people choose to keep the sober January going all year, realizing two things: You do reduce calorie intake in some cases, but you also have the ability to make better food choices when you are not buzzed.

The sparkling waters really helped this become trendy in 2019.

Look for “all buzz, no booze” coffee infused with sparkling drinks in this new year.

Finally, the kids’ trends of healthier eating: The head of the National Restaurant Association told SmartBrief Food and Beverage that expanding healthy items for kids allows them to explore new flavors.

So eating out might have everything from Asian to Mediterranean foods for kids

Grocery stores also expected to mirror this trend by giving kids everything from their own shopping carts to kid favorites that are healthier such as salmon fish sticks without breading to fermented foods and whole wheat macaroni and cheese.

The hope is that kids might even influence parents!
