David Beasley, the executive director of the United Nations World Food Program, says the novel coronavirus has forced on his Rome-based organization to take unprecedented steps to keep feeding millions of starving people in Syria, Iraq, across Africa and elsewhere. The WFP is coping with Italy’s national lockdown to contain the virus. Beasley is in Ottawa this week, where he is fundraising, testifying before Parliament, and opening a new branch office.
