Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte discussed the details of a new legislative decree during a press conference at the Palazzo Chigi in Rome on Monday. The new measures are aimed at supporting Italy’s economy amid the worldwide economic struggle caused by the coronavirus outbreak.
“The state is here, the boosting and supportive measures that were inserted in this decree are concrete evidence of the presence of the state. We are offering a response, a response in the economic field,” Conte told cameras in a room with few attendees due to Italy’s coronavirus lock-down.
“We were the first to put something like €25 billion ($27.8 billion) of fresh money for the benefit of the Italian economic system, for the benefit of enterprises and families. We will activate streams of, wait for it, a total of €350 billion ($389 billion). This is a powerful economic maneuver,” the Italian PM announced proudly.
Conte made it clear that he expects his European counterparts to follow the same path. “Italy is on the front line, we have to facilitate and sustain the other states in this phase, doing everything necessary to help our citizens. It’s a European match that should be played in an end-to-end manner with the spirit of collaboration. It’s a strategy that is shared, with real and effective help and solidarity that we want to put on the table and we trust that all the other member states will follow us,” he stated.
The Prime Minister found time to praise Italians on their current handling of the crisis. “Many Italians are directly in the trenches; in the hospitals, factories, pharmacies and in the supermarket check-outs. Many remain at home but they are not inactive, they sustain those in the trenches from their balconies or their windows. They sing together, they sing the national anthem. We can be very proud to be Italian, together we can do it,” he announced to the nation appreciatively.
Italy remains Europe’s worst-hit country by the COVID-19 outbreak, with 1,809 deaths and over 24,747 infected thus far.
