Scientists said there is one unexpected side-effect to the COVID-19 pandemic: An improvement in air quality in some areas. In Italy — the hardest-hit country in Europe — satellite images released by the European Space Agency showed a drop in air pollution across the country. In particular, there are lower levels of nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant mainly emitted by motor vehicles. The most pronounced decline is in the north, where the lockdown began. Scientists at Stanford University have also tracked a drop in air pollution over parts of China, due to a shutdown of businesses.
