200 days down! 200 consecutive, inspired, and adventurous pairings. When I launched this challenge on January 1st, I knew we’d find some wild combinations, but hitting this milestone has me raising a serious glass to the unexpected magic of flavor alchemy.
To celebrate Day 200, I bypassed the World Cup viewing party snacks and grabbed a local favorite from an Anchorage institution: the barbecue pulled pork sandwich from the iconic Lucky Wishbone. Styled like a hamburger, my videographer recommended removing the top bun just to see the meat. I took it a step further: bypassed the bun, skipped the onions, left the pickles behind, and just took a clean, perfect bite of the barbecue pulled pork all by itself.
The wine? The label kept its secrets close, but wow… talk about a milestone bottle. Say hello to the 2021 Famiglia Cotarella ‘Montiano’ from Lazio, Italy. The twist? This deep, dark, bold red isn’t a traditional Italian blend—it’s 100% Merlot!
This is a legendary, powerful expression with deep dark fruit, velvety yet structural tannins, and vibrant Italian acidity. Pairing a naked bite of that savory, lightly saucy pork with this premium Merlot was pure gold. Because the pork wasn’t overly messy, the meat’s true flavor shined, allowing the wine’s rich texture to complement it beautifully while the bright acidity cut right through the richness.
