Shoppers continued to clear out shelves at a discount store in Gates, New York, a town near Rochester, on Thursday, March 12, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Joseph Frascati filmed this footage of scantily stocked shelves at a Walmart in Gates, saying that “persistent panic buying continues in western New York.” Frascati said people were buying “high” amounts of bottled water and that the store previously ran out of toilet paper.

The National Guard arrived in New Rochelle, a suburb of New York City, on Thursday to help distribute food and disinfect buildings in the “heart of the state’s coronavirus outbreak,” where there were 121 reported cases as of Wednesday, The New York Times reported.

Nearly 125,000 coronavirus cases have been reported to the World Health Organization, according to the agency’s March 12 update. There have been 1,215 cases in the United States, resulting in 36 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s March 12 update.
