Who needs a Schengen visa to travel to Italy?
A Schengen visa is not required for UK citizens who hold either a UK passport or a BOTC, BOC, BPP or BS passport.
However, some citizens from other countries residing in the UK are required to obtain a Schengen visa to travel to Italy. You can view the complete list on the link in the description.
If you don’t have the required three months you should extend your visa from within the UK or, check out the workaround on the blog post.
You should apply for a visa at the Italian Embassy or Italian visa application centre in the UK if:
– Italy is the only Schengen country you plan on visiting;
– Italy is your main destination (the country you will be staying the longest in) or;
– Italy is the first Schengen country you are visiting (when spending an equal amount of days in Italy and another Schengen country)
Steps to Applying for an Italian Schengen Visa from the UK
1. Know Your Visa Type and Length of Validity:
There are different Italian Schengen visa types depending on your purpose of travelling from the UK to Italy. Uniform Schengen Visas (USV) apply to three different types of Schengen visa categories:
– Category “A” (Airport Transit Visa)
– Category “B” (Transit Visa) (Replaced by category C)
– Category “C” (Short-term Visa) the most popular Schengen Visa. It allows you to visit and stay in Italy or any other Schengen member state for a certain period of time depending on the visa validity. It is primarily issued for tourism, visiting family and friends, business and other authorised purposes. It can be provided for single entry, double-entry, or multiple entries, depending on the purpose of your travel.
– Finally, The national visa (category “D”) is granted to individuals who plan on studying, working, or residing permanently in one of the Schengen countries.
Italian multiple-entry Schengen visas can last for one, three or five years. A multiple-entry visa allows you to go in and out of the Schengen Area multiple times for up to 90 days at a time at any given 180 days period.
