Only few people were seen walking through Milan’s historical Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II on Thursday, as Italy ordered the closure of all shops, except for supermarkets and pharmacies, amid the growing coronavirus spread.

Footage shows people with mouth masks and grocery bags walking through the usually bustling 19th-century arcade, famous for housing luxury clothing and jewellery brands as well as upscale dining.

Police officers were seen on site questioning passers-by about what they were doing, where they had been and their destination.

People leaving their house are seen providing a document where they take on responsibility, state the reason why they left the house and acknowledge the regulations in place and the possible penalties for non-compliance. This document is reportedly needed to be allowed to leave the habitation as part of the measures in place to try to slow down the growing coronavirus spread.

Italy remains Europe’s worst-hit country by the coronavirus, with 827 deaths and over 12,000 infected. Lombardy is the worst-hit region by far, with around 7,280 cases.

On Wednesday evening, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced a nationwide shutdown of commercial activities excluding food shops and pharmacies.
