Passengers arriving by FlixBus in Lyon from Italy on Monday were kept on board as a precaution after the driver of the bus and one passenger were hospitalised upon arrival. Both hospitalised patients showed symptoms relating to coronavirus, according to media reports citing health officials.
Police quickly built a security cordon around the bus at Lyon’s Perrache station. “They kept us shut in [on the bus] to check if the driver was contaminated or not. The driver was taken into an ambulance to verify if he was ill or not,” one passenger recounted. No information was given as to how many people were on the bus at the time.
The bus had started out from Milan in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. The region is the centre of Europe’s biggest outbreak of the coronavirus. So far Italy has recorded six deaths as a result of the coronavirus, and at least 219 people in the country are confirmed to be infected.
Many villages in the Lombardy region have been put on lockdown with all cultural and sporting events in the region cancelled.
The police and health officials remained in the area until 13:30 local time. All the passengers but one, who was escorted to a hospital for tests, were eventually able to leave the station. The results of the tests will be known in the coming hours, reports say.
