Streets and squares were empty in the northern city of Bologna on Tuesday, following the regional authorities’ decision to suspend public events and shut down schools and universities for one week, as the coronavirus death toll within Italy hit 11.
While confirmed cases have reached 26 in the Emilia-Romagna region, one local said that she believed the fear over the outbreak is disproportionate, calling it a “psychosis.”
“I have the feeling that Bologna residents are reacting quite well, because they are catching up, seeing each other, walking around,” she added.
Footage shows the most popular venues in the city almost deserted, with cafes closed and a few tourists roaming around. Protective masks and gel sanitisers were out of stock in pharmacies, while supermarkets run out of food supplies.
Cases of the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, have surged in Italy in recent days, with 322 confirmed cases, the highest number in Europe, mainly in the densely populated northern regions of Lombardy and Veneto – where the cities of Milan and Venice are located respectively -and eleven deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
