Long before Nutella became the smooth, chocolate-hazelnut spread we know and love today, it started as a clever fix during a time of scarcity. In World War II, Italian baker Pietro Ferrero faced soaring cocoa prices. To make the most of his ingredients, he combined a small amount of cocoa with sugar, milk, and hazelnuts, forming firm blocks called “Giandujot” that people sliced onto bread. Kids soon began snacking on the blocks like candy, which inspired Ferrero to transform it into a creamy, spreadable paste known as “Supercrema.” In 1964, it was rebranded as Nutella — and a global breakfast favorite was born.
