Coronavirus (aka nCovid-19) worried? Let’s put any coronavirus covid-19 fear in perspective:
Air Pollution Kills More Than 5.5 Million People a Year | Time
Air pollution ‘kills 7 million people a year …The Guardian
Air Pollution Kills 7 Million People a Year, WHO Reports

This is a tourist’s video, taken in Seoul Korea. Experienced thermographers in Vancouver probably recognize why covid-19 coronavirus Korean airport-screening, was like a sieve. Here’s our 2-cents, having utilized Exergen D-series since ~2007. Accuracy of commercial thermal infrared imaging devices depend on distance, reflectivity, calibration, and at least four other factors. The second spot-check by the security guard wasn’t made with the only device existent that is NIST “lifetime-calibrated”, the Exergen D’s. On Asian skin, thermal viewing devices were ~2 degrees Celcius inaccurate, and readings “wandered” also, even at 0mm distance. [Have a video comparing Exergen D to a FLIR-type viewer]. The Korean airport security service man/guard probably doesn’t know any of this. The temperature threshold used by the airport thermal scanner operator is too high, given the 2 degrees Celcius potential error factor, on brown Asian skin. Reflectivity depends on dryness, too. So, a covid-19 disaster was looming for Korea, weeks ago, when we saw the video in January.

WHY A “TEMPERATURE GUN” IS USELESS FOR New CORONA VIRUS nCOVID-19 SYMPTOMS

The accuracy of infrared thermometers “guns” are off by 2 Celcius or 3.5 Farenheit, according to manufacturers’ specifications. That is *not* including emissivity adjustment, calibration, and reflection errors already stated on Youtube by Movitherm, a FLIR thermal imaging equipment distributor.

Accuracy varies from model-to-model.

“Infrared thermometer guns” didn’t contain the virus in Wuhan, nor the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan, nor infections in Korea, Italy, and Iran.

Is it a Cold or the Flu?

Everyone attending will breathe easier knowing that people are fever-tested at the door.

The Flu Almost Always Brings a Fever

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza-like illness activity is now widespread in 48 states, making this the worst flu season since 2003. From 2010 to 2019, the annual death rate from the flu has increased from approximately 12,000 deaths per year in 2011-2012 to 2018-2019.

As cold and flu season continues, we are educating people on how to tell the difference between the cold and the flu. While cold and flu symptoms are typically the same – sore throat, runny nose, fatigue – only the flu is accompanied by a fever.

To make sure your child- or anyone- does not have the flu, take their temperature to make sure they do not have a fever.

“Since fever is really the only way to detect the flu, it’s important to have a reliable thermometer on hand that will fast and accurate reading’”.

“While flu vaccination is recommended by the CDC, it is not 100 percent effective – often less than 50 percent – so vigilance is important even if you have received a flu vaccine.”

The CDC advises those whose concerns to contact their physician before going to the ER or a hospital. This may protect someone who doesn’t have the flu and prevent the spread from those who do. It is important to monitor symptoms, especially fever on an ongoing basis.

Our lab-grade Exergen D-Series infrared (IR) thermometer is the only thermometer that is absolutely accurate regardess of reflectivity. This is what we use. In a recent comparison, other IR thermometers were off by up to 2° Celcius.

Need help with your event or venue? Customers will return to happily dining and partying at Vancouver restaurants and Surrey banquet halls when they feel 100% safe that no one there is running a fever. We probably have the only Exergen D-Series, NIST-certified “for life”, non-contact lab-thermometer, available for venue-entrance-screening people, in Vancouver .
