Hundreds of people carried a giant phallus through Athens, on Saturday, as part of Phallephoria, a celebration honouring the god Dionysus.
Masked participants dressed up in ancient Greek costumes and carried the man-sized phallic figurine through the streets of Plaka, Athens old city district, singing songs and dancing.
Phallephoria honours Dionysus, the god of fertility and wine, associated with ritual madness in ancient Greek mythology, and nowadays marks the beginnings of the modern carnival season.
