In our second episode of this season of Brazil (is not) for Beginners, sommelier Alykhan Karim uncovers a fascinating chapter of Brazilian wine history: how Italian immigrants from the Valpolicella region of northern Italy brought their grapes, their knowledge, and their wine culture to southern Brazil in the late 1800s.
Nearly 150 years later, some of those varieties have nearly disappeared from their homeland, but are thriving in Brazil.
“You’re gonna find Peverella — a grape that has been making beautiful orange wines. You have 15-20 producers in Brazil today working with this grape, but no one in Italy anymore. It’s basically extinct.”
