Six white wines. One country. Three of us tasting blind. Not a single correct guess between us.

There’s one country whose white wines are considered the hardest to identify blind — and we just proved why. We sat down with six bottles ranging from $19 to $215, and between us we ended up guessing Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Portugal, and South Africa before the truth came out.

Along the way, a $19 bottle quietly outperformed most of the lineup, an orange wine had all three of us reaching for 12 bottles, and the final wine threw everyone so hard that one of us genuinely gave up and threw a dart at the map.

This might be the most humbling blind tasting we’ve ever done on Bottle Shock.

  1. you guys had hard time with this because, modern white wine not only does not express the place it comes from, it does not even express a variety it is made from. cultured aromatic yeasts, specific temperatures, lees and oak aging. these wines can be from anywhere. except those orange wines. because skin contact does bring out the place more, even though you have said opposite in the past😅

  2. What a fun video, loved it! (Liked the revised thumbnail font, too. And the photo – so perplexed!)

  3. Favourite wine youtube channel hands down! Big fan from Hong Kong and hope to try some Unico Zelo wines soon!

  4. Well that was devilish. You all had a chance and then #6, the first time Gaja made that wine, came along and upset the apple cart. No Vermentino, no Verdicchio? Leaving those out of an Italian blind tasting is just fiendish. Very fun tasting, love the way you are all able to put the flavors of the wines into words.

  5. There was an Italian restaurant in Detroit. Sometimes people would fill out comment cards. These cards might get pinned with a stick pin to a message board. Sometimes the staff might write a reply. One of the comment cards loved the place but thought the white wine selection was weak. The reply was, "We're Italian. We don't give a damn about white wine." Not true now, if it ever was.
