KitKat, owned by Nestlé, is one of the world’s most popular chocolates, known for its crispy wafer layers and the famous slogan “Have a break, have a KitKat.”
In late March 2026, a truck carrying about 12 tonnes (413,000 bars) of KitKat disappeared while traveling from Italy to Poland ahead of the Easter season. The shipment has not been recovered, making it one of the largest chocolate thefts ever.
While the story has gone viral for its humour, it highlights a real issue: cargo theft in Europe. Food items like chocolate, cheese, and wine are often targeted because they’re easy to sell and hard to trace. Organized groups typically plan such thefts and resell goods quickly in local or cross-border markets.
Unlike electronics, individual chocolate bars don’t have tracking systems, making them low-risk targets. Companies rely on batch codes to trace stolen goods if they reappear.
Responding humorously, Nestlé said the thieves “took the ‘Have a break’ slogan too literally.” Meanwhile, the mystery—dubbed the “Great KitKat Heist”—remains unsolved.
