Tents were set up for a preliminary assessment of suspected coronavirus patients outside a hospital in Turin, on Monday.
The measure, decided by local authorities in coordination with the Civil Protection, is meant to avoid people affected by the virus accessing the emergency room and coming into contact with other patients at San Giovanni Bosco Hospital.
Some visiting the emergency room said they were concerned by the outbreak. “There hasn’t been any quarantine ordered here in Turin. Everyone look calm and nobody is alarmed. In supermarkets there’s no stuff, food is lacking in Turin. We are scared for our family,” said a man outside the hospital.
But many in the city looked unfazed and believe the figures are not alarming. “There’s a psychosis pretty unmotivated for what are the figures at the moment,” explained a pharmacist whose drugstore run off protective masks in the past few days. He continued “the figures we have so far do not speak about a particularly dangerous virus compared to others.”
According to the last figures, cases of coronavirus have reached 229 confirmed cases in Italy, the highest number in Europe, mainly in the densely populated northern regions of Lombardy and Veneto – where the cities of Milan and Venice are located respectively -and four deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
