For the final episode of The Grand Tour, James, Richard and Jeremy drove across Zimbabwe in the 1970s cars they always wanted to own. James kept his Triumph Stag and had it restored by Richard Hammond’s workshop. It’s finally back in the bunker and it’s time for a guided tour – including a real-time demonstration of putting up the roof and a detailed explanation of the quintessentially 70’s concept of ‘overdrive’.

  1. Always thought they are a fine looking car (just needs metal reflective plates to be perfect …), that roof looks like a bit of mither though

  2. Beautiful car. As a 10yo in 70s, Father driving open country, i was standing on back seat holding roll bar; couldn't do it theses days! Wonderful memories of fu, joy and freedom

  3. A buddy of mine had an early Triumph TR6 with overdrive on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears. Ever since driving it, I've wanted an old British sports car with overdrive. It was so nice to have either in-town or out on the highway! 🧐

  4. Rubbish paint job, there's moisturise got in between the lacquer, i could do a better job at home before I became handicapped

  5. i have a volvo 740 with an overdrive, but bc it was a module behind the gearbox output, i had the idea to bolt it to the 5 speed gearbox instead, they car became a lot more economical

  6. My wife hates the colour purple, but she’ll make an exception here. She said “What’s James May prattling on about?” Then, looking over my shoulder to my iPad, she said “Ooh, what kind of car is that? It’s lovely.” Naturally, I responded with “That’s James’ Staaaaag.” 🤓

  7. @6.20 for anyone else with a heavy hard top, a great idea is to mount a pulley system on the roof of your garage, with soft straps etc to cradle the roof (and not damage it)… Store the hardtop on the ceiling when not in use, and then gently lower it down using the pulleys when you need to.

  8. my pops had a saying for triuimph black knights box because the fuse box would always fail or atleast they did in the 70sand 80s

  9. i like how the only people left talking about toxic masculinity are 70 year old white men and women. smh

  10. agree with the pleasant styling. It is just a lovely looking car, all the bends and bits fit together nicely, and would be a fantastic car to have.

  11. For some reason this color is associated with TVR in my head. I don't usually like it, but it looks good on the Staaaag.

  12. I'm not doing it if I can't press a button especially after 6+ minutes to get no where. And there's nothing wrong with an auto box….
