True Italians might take one look at the dishes on American menus and say forget about it.
Here are five foods Americans eat that you probably won’t find on Italian menus.
Spaghetti and meatballs sound like an Italian staple.
Except that Insider points out in Italy, spaghetti usually isn’t served with meatballs.
They exist separately.
Putting them together in one dish is an Italian-American thing.
The outlet also says you won’t find “Italian” salad dressing – or pre-packaged dressing.
Food blogger Disgraces on the Menu writes that at restaurants, oil and vinegar are brought to the table for folks to dress their own salad themselves using this simple mix and adding salt and pepper.
Delicious, yes.
Authentic, no.
The Food Network says a true Italian would never eat fettuccine alfredo.
The closest thing would be pasta in bianco – or white pasta – which is pasta mixed with butter, cheese and olive oil.
Italians also don’t eat chicken served with pasta in a dish, according to BuzzFeed.
It’s because chicken is supposed to be eaten in the second course because Italians stagger how they eat.
This keeps textures and flavors separate.
Speaking of breaking up the courses, Insider says you’re not going to find the giant American portions on Italian menus.
Forget “family-style”.
It’s every man for himself with an individual salad, then an appetizer portion of pasta or risotto, followed by a meat, seafood or veggie main dish.
