There are few places in America where the food scene is as unexpected and important as Charleston, South Carolina. Guided by chef Sean Brock, I explore a city that has quietly become a major culinary destination. We dive headfirst into the region’s food culture, eating traditional Gullah cuisine like oyster pie and shrimp and grits, before taking in a RiverDogs minor league baseball game with Charleston resident and team co-owner, Bill Murray. But the true revelation might just be my very first trip to Waffle House. It is an “irony-free zone” of pecan waffles, scattered and smothered hash browns, and pure safety that I honestly found better than The French Laundry.

  1. Waffle House is the BEST! Everything soaked in butter, reminds me of another Japanese phrase bata kusai, smells likes butter. Their first whiff of Europeans!

  2. Wow!!, this was an Awesome Episode👍, one I'd never seen, Its sad to think he's been gone for 8yrs come this June 8th 2026

  3. Sean lost me at voluntarily drinking Budweiser and Jägermeister (moreso the beer). Does he hate himself? Why?

  4. I forgot how soothing his voice was. Reminds me of watching Bob Ross with my Nanu when I was little. RIP Anthony it was nice to hear your voice again.

  5. Every Thanksgiving Day, the wife and I drive two hours to the middle of nowhere for a day hike. When we hit the road to come back home, there is a Waffle House about 20 minutes away. It’s the only thing open on Tday (at least in 90 miles in either direction.) We live it up and enjoy every bite while not missing a traditional Tday meal not even a little bit.
And, we miss Tony so much. What a legend. What a lover of good food, low brow and high brow. 💔

  6. I wonder what Anthony Bourdain would think of every comment section being a relentless collection of whiny, like hunting self-involved pseudo-eulogies? Never a mention of the work, no support for the subject matter or the feelings evoked. Never a comment from someone who actually went out and enjoyed a meal in his honour. Seems to me, YT is everything he was trying to pull us away from.

  7. An original air date would be great in the description 👍 Thank you so much! God, I miss Tony <3

  8. My father was a top chef (italian cuisine), and I still recall him saying how much he loved simple fish fingers and baked beans at times. His name was Tony too. The scene in Waffle House made it all make sense, finally!

  9. Watching Anthony cast out into a shallow pond knowing that all he ever wanted in his life was peace and love and he had some right there but his career constantly dragged him away from those places. He used to say that food tasted better with sand between his toes and yet based on his lifestyle he seldom ever got to appreciate that. We could all learn a lesson from what he knew he wanted and needed and what he allowed himself to have

  10. By far the best food commentator ever. His knowledge as a chef, plus genuine love of food, plus his kind and intelligent personality really made quality viewing for lovers of life, food and travel. RIP

  11. still wondering how they got Bill Murray because he never answers a phone call and just may have forgotten the date 😀
