Today, let’s dive into a fascinating wine story and separate the facts from the marketing hype. You’ve probably seen those bottles covered in sea shells and sand, costing $200 with the promise of ‘underwater-aged wine.’ Sounds magical, doesn’t it?

I did a blind tasting of two wines from Liguria, Italy: one aged underwater for 18 months, and the other in a traditional cellar for 30 months. Same grapes, same method – only the aging environment was different.

The result might shock you: the cellar-aged wine was fresher, more precise, and more complex – all while being twice as cheap!

Want to know the full breakdown and see if ‘underwater’ wine is actually worth it? Watch until the end, and tell me in the comments: what matters more to you – the story behind the bottle or the liquid in your glass?

  1. Great and interesting video Anya! Personally, I care about what's in the bottle, and especially love a good QPR bargain! No way I'd pay that much more for a "story". Many wine drinkers may agree that the best stories are made around the occasion for opening a good bottle, not around the organic debris stuck to it. Cheers!

  2. Guilty, my favorite cognac is Kelt. Although I do love the taste, it is not put underwater but on the water. The cognac is barreled and taken on ships to swirl around to "smooth" it out, I fell for it. The bottle used to come with a list of ports it visited, which probably adds to the price, but that stopped. Like you said, I love the story, it's a guy thing.I do like it though

  3. There is tons of marketing BS and gimmicks in the wine industry.
Another typical example is grand cru DRC.

  4. You said the first had a subtle saline note on the nose. Is it possible that water got around the cork?

  5. Entrepreneurs can get very creative to enhance the marketing and charge an extra buck…. Thanks for the video!

  6. A part of me wishes I had never known about this 😂😂😂
I do give them credit for the gimmick. Perfect for tik tok dumbfluencers to show off their sea-aged wines at their vacation Airbnbs…

  7. This is a fabulous video in two ways. One, I had never heard about sea aged wine and it was interesting to hear about them. Two, I am not sure I have heard anyone in these types of video call out misleading marketing claims.
I am pretty sure you are not getting a case of sea aged wine as a gift from one of the producers.

  8. This reminds me of a story a friend of mine back in college told me. His family owned a beer distributorship and once a year they would take all the old beer bottles that wouldn't sell, wash off the dust, and repackage them into "Beers of the World" six-pack packages. These repackaged old beers that wouldn't sell otherwise would always sell out immediately because of the marketing and improved perceived value.

  9. Bravo Anya, you confirm what I always thought……It is all BS……..They also do this in France and in the USA, again BS……….I am a no BS man, I like straight things and I don't buy into a fantasy world……Soon they will send some wine to the Moon and it will taste like "Asino" piss, but cost an arm and a leg…….😘🍷

  10. There is a similar, but slightly more real conceit in America for a bourbon brand. After several years of traditional aging, the barrels are planed in a shipping container and sent off on sea voyages for a few months. Unlike with the underwater wine, the movement and changes in temp and humidity do seem to have some slight effect.

  11. Absolutely love your channel.
Never heard of aging wine under the ocean (on purpose), so this was extra exciting to watch.

  12. This was a fun excursion! My guess would be that only the temperature and the light could influence the sealed wines in a different way above and under water, provided they were not rocking about. Of the two, a cellar should be able to provide a more stable environment, which seems like the better option.

  13. I tried an Italian wine aged under the sea once…some guy from Venice just shrugged and said,
“Underwater aging? My cousin’s wine’s been doing that since 2003… we call it Tuesday.” 🍷🌊

  14. When you produce an average wine, you need to fool people into think it is "unique".

  15. Someone set up an underwater aging operation off the coast of California. The bottles looked neet, but the wine was meh. They damaged the coastal ecosystem and fled the state.
