How do you follow up the highest scoring Chianti Classico in Wine Spectator history?
With another stunning vintage.
The Rocca di Montegrossi San Marcellino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2020 comes on the heels of the legendary 2019 release, a wine that scored 97 points and set a new benchmark for the category.
And now the 2020 is delivering in a big way.
Antonio Galloni awarded the wine 96 points after a vertical tasting, confirming what insiders already knew. This is not just a great Chianti Classico. It is one of the most serious Sangiovese wines being produced in Tuscany today.
San Marcellino is a single vineyard wine, composed of 88 percent Sangiovese and 12 percent Pugnitello, a rare indigenous Tuscan variety that adds color, structure, and depth. The vineyard itself has a long history, with a mix of older vines and carefully selected plantings that bring both power and precision to the wine.
The élevage is extensive, with over 30 months of aging across large oak casks, smaller barrels, and cement, allowing the wine to develop complexity without heavy oak influence.
In the glass, this is Chianti Classico with real presence.
Black cherry, cassis, and dark fruit dominate, layered with earthy spice and a subtle balsamic edge. The structure is firm but polished, and the depth of fruit gives the wine a profile that often leans closer to Brunello than traditional Chianti.
This is a wine built to age.
Give it five to ten years and it will reward patience, but it already shows impressive balance and drinkability today.
At around $60, it delivers a level of quality that easily competes with wines at twice the price.
For serious Italian wine lovers, this is one to secure before it disappears.
