Bolgheri is one of the most prestigious wine regions in Italy.
It’s home to legendary Super Tuscans like Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Masseto. These are wines that routinely sell for hundreds of dollars a bottle.
Grattamacco sits right in the middle of that story.
Founded in the late 1970s, it was one of the pioneering estates in Bolgheri and quickly established itself as one of the region’s benchmark producers. Today the estate remains one of the most respected names on the Tuscan coast.
Which is why wines like this are so surprising.
The 2023 Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso is the estate’s third wine, made from vineyards planted between 1989 and 2002. These are mature vines from serious terroir in one of Italy’s most expensive wine regions.
The blend combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and a small portion of Sangiovese, giving the wine both Bordeaux depth and unmistakable Italian character.
In the glass it shows cassis, cocoa, and dark berry richness from the Bordeaux varieties, layered with balsamic spice and sour cherry lift from the Sangiovese. The result is a complete, aromatic, beautifully balanced red with real depth and personality.
Early reviews have already been impressive.
Audrey Frick awarded the wine 94 points, calling it an early contender for year-end Top 100 lists.
And yet the price remains shockingly approachable.
At $27, this is one of the most compelling values in Bolgheri.
For a wine from one of the region’s historic estates, that’s an opportunity worth jumping on.
