Astonishing new data from the Italian farmers’ association: More and more young people are moving away from cities to rural areas in order to work in farming. For many, it’s an active choice to change career.
The association says the number of young farmers in Italy has risen by 13 per cent over the last 10 years, more than anywhere else in Europe. One of these new farmers is the young Roman Giacomo Lepri. After graduating with a degree in ethnology, like many young Italians he struggled to find a job. Instead of going abroad, he founded the Cooperativa Agricola Coraggio. Now, he is fighting to have unused public land in the city of Rome allocated to young farmers. He hopes to join forces with like-minded people to organically farm the abandoned Borghetto San Carlo estate.
Rome has been Italy’s largest owner of agricultural land since antiquity. Giacomo Leprì’s campaign is aimed at changing urban policy, so that the capital’s agricultural heritage can be tapped to create jobs for young farmers.
In the steep hills around the city of Genoa there’s also plenty of agricultural land -abandoned because cultivating it is a challenge. When Davide Moro and Matteo Rizzitano decide to quit their jobs at a car body repair shop, finding land to farm wasn’t a problem. Nevertheless, the path for these new young farmers in Rome and Genoa has been strewn with obstacles. Despite EU goals to promote urgently-needed generational change in agriculture, securing long-term financial resources is difficult for small businesses like these.
Still, the two men say there’s no chance they’re giving up. The career changers aren’t just motivated by Italy’s high youth jobless rate, but also by a desire for self-determined work close to nature.

Love Italy so much. Beautiful country and beautiful people. I just wish politicians would love it just as much and protect it
this isnt brokeback mountain
The western, USA life style is not sustainable, it crushes humans…this is happening all over the planet! Kuddos and blessings, form a small coffee farm in Nicaragua!
As a vegan I never cease to be surprised how cheap vegetables are. I would fully support paying more for good quality vegetables. To maintain my culinary preferences I need vegetable farmers to make a decent living. Net net a plant based diet is so incredibly cheap.
I'm in Liguria near Andora I was thinking of going back to the earth, but 42 means I miss all the young farmers grants I think they should rebrand it as new farmers grants.
…great project from a great couple. Wish them succcess in farming and in their relationship!
🧡
1:24 are they a couple cause I ship it 🤭🥰
Italy is a really beautiful country.
Wishing good luck to young farmers
Organic farming is the strategic for healing spiritual, healthy and wealthy environment
First 2 guys shown are couple? 😍
Revival of rome❤
AI, sikkcon valley everything is in a bubble. Only way out is age old practises like farming.
No job is more noble than connect with your land by growing organic food!
This is the only way to restore health of your own, your customers, and the environment.
A very important and well done report with beautiful images! I think most of us feel "the wind of change" and hearing it's question :"Is humankind still on the right track"?
I am glad that I am not the only one who thinks whether it is all about money and luxury or a fullfilling happy life….
Omg, my husband’s family lives in a rural area, no one there thinks of modern professions, plus government made it impossible for young people to build houses for living as like 80% of land is agricultural and you need something like 10 hectares to build a small house…. Like there are no other jobs than agriculture and hospitality….
I don’t understand why in Italy in remote locations people don’t do freelance and online work. Italy has perfect conditions for that! Imagine you live somewhere in Sardinia near the sea, amazing weather, your own property, no rent, great food, sun, friends and family, low taxes for freelancers and work online.
Instead Italians have mentality of complaining that there is no work in Italy….
I am a farmer by birth, but right now I am doing a full time administrative job. I chose this job because we lost our farmland and because I am an IT expert, my specialty is operating administrative softwares.
But I certainly don't like working in an office instead I always open to swipe jobs with a farmer anytime, anywhere.
Farming is in my blood
I hate sitting in an office for 8 hours a day, and 4 days a week.
Woww Great video, after seeing this i too wanna become a farmer😀
Awesome men. Would like to meet them in their nature 😊
Incredibile work from you DW, what an awesome content. Thanks for this gem
What an amazing piece of work. Truly inspiring. I am sure this will inspire many young farmers in times to come. Kudos!
This is the way to do it! Give the customer what they want, which is what my people are best at. In America, you get a box of whatever was grown that month, even if you do not want it. I find that grotesque.
Name of the traditional song?
Respect to these guys for wanting to keep up food traditions. The most important traditions for humanity.
Friends? Roommates? Doesn’t matter, I love these farmers!
Are they a Couple ❤️
The couple is so cute …
Great documentary once again! They should make sauce and sell it online. I'd buy it.
Some Italian edition broke back mountain 🇮🇹
Are they lovers? 😊
How about raising chickens too, the poop will be a good fertilizer for the garden.
This is amazing, and something feels natural and real.
I'm a small organic farmer in the Ariege mountains of France and I can tell you it is not profitable, But saying that, I do try to feed my local community – With no help I might add.
In Romania we've used mulch for ages, I'm amazed Italians are learning about mulch, shows the difference between the two countries, one is decreasing in its economy and the other one is raising 😅
Farming is one of the hardest and stressful jobs you can do.
As usual DW documentaries are always tops👌🏾
Be this message spread worldwide….We should think outside the box and be creative in our way of lives….❤️🌞🌹
Video name should be, "you cant be just a farmer, you need an extra source of income to do it"
All of them survive basically on gov support, catering, social media….
