My 2 cents
1. He can't end it with nothing but loss to show for the war. He would go down in the history books as nothing more than an absolute failure of a dictator. So this would be nothing more than a selfish attempt to leave a legacy.
2. He genuinely believes the "west" or USA to be a threat to Russia so they can't back down. Problem with this assumption is that it should be getting pretty hard to justify his actions with intent to protect Russia when he seems to be causing way more harm to Russia and its people than the dreaded west ever could.
The only question is: "does Putin start a nuclear war when he realizes he is being dethroned?"

Since the war began, almost all the predictions from “the economists” have been wrong. If Ukraine is winning, and Russia won't last, Putin couldn't sustain, one after another you were wrong, and Russia is still doing better than Ukraine, or Europe for that matter.
