For today’s video, I visited Trader Joe’s to find the most interesting red wines that offer good value. I picked up three wines from three different countries, all of which have the right markers to be worthwhile bottles at a reasonable price.
Let’s get right into the winetasting. Nizza is a small, relatively new, Barbera-focused DOCG in Piedmont, NW Italy. Nizza has received heaps of positive press in recent years. Bersano is a reliable source that produces wine for TJ’s. The 2020 Trader Joe’s Platinum Nizza Riserva is made from 100% Barbera. The riserva is aged at least 12 months in barrel and 30 months in total before being released for sale. It’s priced at $15.99 per bottle.
The next wine is from Spain, the 2023 Satis Dei, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla, located a bit south of Madrid. It can be a good place to find value in robustly styled reds. This one is made from 55% Syrah and 45% Garnacha. It’s generally available year-round, priced at $9.99.
The next wine is the 2022 Trader Joe’s Grand Reserve Cairanne Cru Cotes du Rhone from the southern Rhone Valley of France. Grenache is the primary grape variety. Cairanne became a Cru only about ten years ago. It’s a top source for value from the southern Rhone. It’s seasonally available, priced at $12.99.
Between the three, the Cairanne was the standout, followed by the Nizza, and third was the Syrah, Garnacha blend.

Bob, thanks for the video. Your comment, putting the wines in perspective, is important. Are these great wines, are they profound? Nope. Just good solid values in a very expensive wine world.
Thank you.
I'm a big fan of Barbera. I love the wines from Vietti and Sottimano. Southern Rhone's are also my everyday go to wines. Excellent work, Bob
Gonna head over to TJs today and pick these up and do a comparative tasting of my own!
I don’t think I heard how the Rhône was after 2 hours.
We don`t have a TJ`s here in town but there is one 10 miles away in Davis, yes that UC Davis so will stop by next time I visit my sister. The Cairanne sounds like a delicious value. Thanks for this and keep up the good work Bob.Cheers!
Trader Joe's and Costco are my go to places for wine. I can always find a real value in the under $20. price range.
Thanks again. Very helpful video.
Love TJ for value, particularly their Douro
Another winner video. I love southern Rhône wines and I will definitely try to pick up a few bottles of Cairanne. Wow, what a deal. It’s really fun to find gems at a great price. There is a lot of crappy wine out there priced at $12.99. Thanks for sifting thru the TJ wines and picking out the winners.
I'll pickup some Carrianne but it will be tough to edge out Gigondas for my palate. 😉
Well…..you just put Trader Joe's on the map for my wine buying. Usually end up at either TW or a local wine shop I have recently discovered. Love these value wine videos you do! I have shopped Costco, but really infrequently as it is always so crowded Have not yet experienced Rhone wines yet, but plan to soon!🍷
