In my tasting today I look at a pre-release sample of Tenuta San Guido Le Difese Toscana IGT 2024. The wine is a blend of 75% Sangieovese with 25% of Cabernet Sauvignon. The blend combines Cabernet Sauvignon fruit that has been declassified from vineyards that might otherwise have been used to produce fruit for Guidalberto or even Sassicaia. The Sangiovese however is purchased in from other growers. While initially seeming open fresh and lively, the wine reveals a surprising depth and superb balance, proving very impresive.
The Tenuta San Guido estate is located in Bolgheri, the Tuscan region of Maremma. Owned since the Middle Ages by the della Gehardesca family, the estate only started producing the wines for which it is famous in the 1940s and only commercialized them for the first time in 1971.
The first vintage of Le Difese was the 2002. The wine is named after the tusks of the Wild Boar, underlining the wild nature of the Maremma region where Wild Boar still roam free.
