Italian renovation series explaining renovation costs, geometra’s and prices for materials. I bought a farmhouse with land near Corinaldo in the Marche region. The bargain purchase was good but the renovation costs are expensive. I reveal my plans for the inside layout.

Welcome back to Italy. In this video I reveal the reality of the costs involved to fix my problematic roof and the challenges I have to get the job done in an affordable way. I also take you on a tour inside to show you the current condition and the layout plans that will take shape once the roof is fixed. I show the progress of the olive trees following the snow and stormy weather that recently crossed Italy. My travel usually involved me driving to Italy but this time I flew to Ancona and did not hire a car. I check if its possible to spend a few weeks in Italy without a car and use a bike and ebike to enjoy the lifestyle of this beautiful region.

Thank you all for the kind messages of support and the buy me a coffee gifts. Please feel free to ask me any question and for those that want a deeper conversation to discuss your plans, details of how to call me are on my website.

Cheers all. Bring on sping!
Richard.

  1. Looking forward to the roof development, those quotes sounds almost as obscene as some London builders! But anyway, just had to mention, wheelbarrow technique, simply turn yourself and pull the wheel barrow behind you on the way back.

  2. Hey mate, if you buy a fan for the top of your wood stove, it’ll push the heat around the room to make the room much warmer. They aren’t expensive, but do a great job. Maybe consider an extractor fan in the bathroom or dehumidifier for the bathroom. Just suggestions tho. I think you’re doing an amazing job on the place mostly by yourself, so well done. Also, I know you were not in favour of sponsoring products, but maybe it would be worth reconsidering for some of the work to make life a little easier on yourself. Wish I was younger and fitter to be able to help out.

  3. I've been watching you from day one to start. After seeing this video I'm realizing you're a bit scattered brained. I mean focus on one project at a time and definitely inside after seeing this. Why the heck are you doing outside projects under these conditions? I'm not sure I can even watch going forward it's driving me crazy knowing how many projects you've got started and not focusing on things that should be obvious. The mad King of his domain it's crazy. Im not trying to be mean as I find your personality quite lovely.

Focus brother, prioritize and stop spreading your energy so widely.

    GL!

  4. Keep going as i have started bidding nearby. Mad ideas too but EU passport works! You need a person there more to help formulate ideas to practice. Also the roof is a 2/3 week project as the beams & water damage as you unfold. Are there timber folk you can work with or barter with?

  5. Maybe I missed something, what toilet would guests use, you on suite bath?? I know the outdoor bathroom would be used but in the middle of the night??

  6. Hey Richard, if you dip the broken olive branch into some honey and then into some good soil cut most of the branches off the top and water as needed keeping warm that should work and you’ll be able to replant

  7. You really don't need to re roof it. Strip the tiles off. Remediate the roof space ceiling. The timbers are fine. Reinstall and replace tiles. No scaffolding required. Get a local, retired tradesman to knock it off for around €5,000. You're being scammed. We have a house in Molise 200km away from you.

  8. Please don't do an open fire, we used to have one in the 'taverna' but on the days you need the fire the most (cold, rainy or foggy days), the smoke probably will go into your room instead of the chimney. Their exist ventilation systems to bring hot air to other rooms. Or you can combine the fireplace with a water heater that supplies radiators with hot water.
About your current kitchen, I think it is perfect (apart from the sink issue). The open shelves will reduce humidity problems. In my not insulated taverna I always have damp problems in my kitchen cabinets. Open shelfs would be much better

  9. Hi Rich, I know it's only for a short time but oil filled electric radiators are pretty good for warming a room, also as someone said, a dehumidifier does the job too for the bathroom. I've lived in those situations several times and I think of it as an adventure but you do have a lot going on in your world. Don't worry about the people who have nothing better to do than criticise, you're doing great. The sun will be out soon and the red wine will warm the brain cells😂

  10. Hi Rich! I was thinking about Your roof as well ,looks quiet scarry. I think the best way and cheaper version could be trying do something on your own partly change the tiles. Maybe you can buy some use one tiles but in far condition… Regards Waldek!

  11. Thanks for the lovely video, Richard! You must really love Italy when you are camping in your own home 😁. But the ideas you have for the house are great. For the fireplace I think it should be better to make a pipe through the chimney and close up the chimney. The heat stays better inside, I think. With an open fireplace and open chimney you lose a lot of heat quickly. To distribute the heat inside the room better, you have those little steel fans to put on the woodstove. They turn automatically because of the heat and they will send the heat further into the room. Maybe it helps 🤷🏼‍♂️. Good luck and I am looking forward for your next update.

  12. I remember when you first arrived, your Italian wasn't so great sorta say. How're the language skills improving, and do you do a study for this?

  13. Have you consideres putting the washingmachine in the bathroom too? Looks like there is already electricity (for the waterheater) .

  14. DIY roof sounds like a good plan to me. Dont underestimate the hours it takes. Even replacing a support timber can blow out into a days work and there are always surprises. Insurance/liability is my only worry, if you are hiring people and one gets hurt?
For scaffolding for personal use, there is generally a LOT of the stuff available for scrap metal value that has failed compliance or is the older style (not approved). Mid range option is to buy good 2nd hand commercial and then resell after the projects done (i would do this with a "cherry picker" too). Or just struggle along with one or 2 new sections rather than a full house surround. Make sure you have some heavy tarps available and a way to secure em just in case something comes up or the weather changes. Bargain option ive found for this is used billboard signage sheets , crazy heavy duty, massive and for nearly nothing.
Ok, too much typing, not enough wine, good luck!

  15. I live in my home while I renovate. I have to walk around the house to access my basement. I also have proper flooring in only part of house.

  16. I'd totally help with the roof except I don't like heights, I have no experience in roofing, and I'm not very handy at all. 😆I'm great at organizing and cleaning, though! And like you, I have a PhD in hindsight. So, what I'll do for now is buy you a coffee and tell you how much I like your videos. 😁

  17. Rennovation is a process and it is ok to take time. My material choices, color, etc have changed as I go due to costs, work and skills. I now have a walk in closet, office, bedroom and bath done. I ended up using plain wood boards for the floor in three rooms, rolled cork for one office wall (I can pin things up), and for the kitchen I tacked linoleum rolls down so I could wash it for now. I work inside in winter and outside in summer

  18. There is a YouTuber called not useless yet, he did a section of his roof himself. A subscriber sent him a 3D rendering (or something) of the area. You should give his videos a watch or get in contact with him, collaboration time!

  19. Knock the wall out with the fire place, stick a free standing fire place in the room, stick a pan of water on top of fire or kettle to boil or heat water for dishes or cuppa

  20. You are such an elegant gentleman Richard you should say very plain and clear that the prices are ridiculous and the time waiting for any documents is ridiculous too you won't offend anyone Italian knows very well😂

  21. What have they said about the roof, does it need to be restored to the same style or can you go a bit more modern with it?

  22. Hi Richard! Always nice following your progress. GUERRIERO NERO is definitely one of our top choices, we love it, and we always keep a couple of spare bottle with us 🙂

As to the roof, I am having the same difficulties and quotes, maybe because I am only about 40km from you… I will absolutely end up doing the job myself with some help, those quotes are totally out of question, and peaple should start waking up and stopping paying those prices.

    Look forwards to your updates!

  23. Rich cheaper fix use that electric fan in living room to push the stove heat around or get a couple of stove fans if the head room is tight like ours we got two 125 mm fans

  24. Richard, I have a solution for your car non issue. Just buy a cheap car in England, drive it to Italy and leave it there. If that can done legally it’s a solution because I don’t know if you’re able to buy and insure a car in Italy with a non Italian driving license and residence.

  25. is the chimney not sleeved from the woodburner ?? massive difference if you do that … Double sided open fire would be epic, but the truth is that they're messy and inefficient so you'll probably end up only using it very occasionally whereas the wood burner you can use all the time – guess it depends on the alternative heating plans ?? Roll on Spring.. being outside most of the time makes camping inside easier to live with .. ish.. 🙂

  26. Wow, these roof prices!? 😳 I'm also getting a new roof this year and was a bit annoyed that the price jumped from €12,000 to €16,000 within a year! I know you can't really compare prices because of the country! 🙂 Don't get discouraged, it'll be fine, inside and outside! Best wishes 🌼🌼🌼

  27. I would rip out the fireplace and forget the 2 sided one. We had a log fire and stopped using it after 1 yr. The smoke created health issues, and that from a really modern one, only last yr. I would knock out the fireplace and wall, opening up the room, and make a really nice size family room. For heating, I'd put in storage heaters or something without mess or fumes. Taking down the wall, you could make the division with a beautiful brick arch. Just my opinion from experience and over 30 years in property. Good luck, keep it up 👌👍🥂🍾
