Last month, during a trip to Tuscany I visited the Petra Winery in the Val di Cornia, to the south of Maremma – it was an impressive place to visit and not just because of its striking architecture but also because of its lively and exciting wines. The winery has been working hard to refine its range. One of the changes instigated has been to reduce the amount of time the top wines spend in oak – taking them out of barrel earlier and allowing them to finish their maturation in concrete tanks. The results appear to be wines with greater vibrancy and focus.

I very much enjoyed the wines I tasted here, they are all labelled as IGT Toscana. The range starts with the Hebo, a blend of Sangiovese with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The second wine tasted was a lively, elegant Merlot called Querceagobbe and the range is completed by a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc that is simply called Petra.
